Mystery Missile Launch Seen off Calif. Coast - CBS News:

"(CBS) A mysterious missile launch off the southern California coast was caught by CBS affiliate KCBS's cameras Monday night, and officials are staying tight-lipped over the nature of the projectile.

CBS station KFMB put in calls to the Navy and Air Force Monday night about the striking launch off the coast of Los Angeles, which was easily visible from the coast, but the military has said nothing about the launch.

KFMB showed video of the apparent missile to former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Ellsworth, who is also a former Deputy Secretary of Defense, to get his thoughts."

"Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan says his country has 'no intention' of apologizing for the detention of a Chinese fishing boat captain, whose arrest has marked a new low in relations between the two countries.

Kan made the remarks today after China reiterated its demand for an apology from Japan late on September 25, just hours after Tokyo first refused to apologize to China despite the captain's release."

"'The NY Times reports that China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has published a list of 2,087 steel mills, cement works and other energy-intensive factories required to close by September 30 after discussions with provincial and municipal officials to identify industrial operations with outdated, inefficient technology. The goal of the factory closings is 'to enhance the structure of production, heighten the standard of technical capability and international competitiveness and realize a transformation of industry from being big to being strong,' the ministry says. The current Chinese five-year plan calls for using 20 percent less energy this year for each unit of economic output than in 2005 but surging production by heavy industry since last winter has put in question China's ability to meet this target. In addition to the energy-efficiency objective in the current five-year plan, a plan announced by President Hu Jintao late last year called for China to reduce its carbon emissions per unit of economic output by 40 to 45 percent by 2020, compared with 2005 levels.'"

I was a moderator in that discussion, so none of my comments appear there. Sounds like a ploy to look good to the West and stay out of any economy-crippling treaties.

Avatar: Sort of Biggest Movie Ever

"Avatar" becomes king of the (box office) world

Self-proclaimed "king of the world" director James Cameron has just upstaged himself.

The filmmaker's sci-fi fantasy epic "Avatar" has surpassed his own 1997 record-setting disaster movie "Titanic" to become the highest-grossing movie ever, not accounting for ticket price inflation, foreign currency fluctuations and surcharges on 3-D screens.

Through Monday, "Avatar" racked up $1.85 billion in worldwide ticket sales, edging past "Titanic's" $1.84 billion -- a feat it achieved in less than 40 days, according to the film's distributor, 20th Century Fox.

"Avatar's" domestic take of $554.9 million still slightly trails "Titanic's" $600.7 million, but overseas it has taken in slightly more, $1.30 billion to the earlier film's $1.24 billion.

However, "Titanic" still rules the universe in terms of how many people went to see it compared to the number that have lined up for "Avatar."

China renames mountain after movie 'Avatar'

A mountain in Zhang Jiajie, Hunan Province in China was recently renamed "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" because the local government said it is the prototype of the floating mountain in the movie Avatar.

"Pandora is too far away, but Zhang Jiajie is close. Welcome to Zhang Jiajie and explore a real Pandora world," read the government statement.

The government told local media the decision was made based on discussion with local residents.

"We hope the new name will help promote Zhang Jiajie to the world and bring us more tourists," said one of the local authorities.

That second image makes more sense if you know that China pulled Avatar from most of screens across the country because it was reminding the peasants how horrible their own government is.  Give us your tourists but we ain't showin' your movies!

Avatar pulled from Chinese cinemas

Beijing - Chinese authorities have ordered cinemas to stop showing box-office smash Avatar, in a move apparently motivated by both commercial and political concerns.

Two Beijing cinemas confirmed that they would stop showing the ordinary version of Avatar, but not the 3D version, from Saturday, despite the movie's high popularity.

Newspaper reports said the state-run China Film Group had ordered all Chinese cinemas to stop showing the film. It had been reportedly scheduled to run until February 28.

Avatar reportedly took about 300 million yuan (R297m) at the box office in the first eight days after its release in China on January 4.

Many commentators in China found a political resonance in the film's story of the Na'vi's battle to protect their land and culture from outsiders, comparing them to Chinese citizens fighting to protect their property from the government and developers.

"Somehow, the film struck a chord with Chinese audiences and created a social phenomenon," Huang Hung wrote yesterday. "Why? All the forced removal of old neighbourhoods in China make us the only earthlings who can really feel the pain of the Na'vi," she said.

Cultural officials also wanted to ensure the success of a big-budget, state-approved film of the life of social philosopher Confucius scheduled for release nationwide on Friday, the Apple Daily said. - Sapa-dpa

Another damn spy convicted

Retired AF officer convicted in China spying case

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A jury has convicted a retired Air Force officer on charges of
selling classified information on U.S.-China military relations to a Chinese
agent and lying to the FBI about it.
James W. Fondren Jr. was convicted
Friday on three counts in Alexandria federal court and was acquitted on several
others. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.
Fondren retired from the
Air Force as a lieutenant colonel in 1996 and later worked at the Pentagon as a
civilian.
He was charged with funneling classified military information to
Tai Shen Kuo, a New Orleans furniture salesman and naturalized U.S. citizen who
turned out to be a spy for China.
Prosecutors said Fondren wrote "opinion
papers" for Kuo that were often thinly veiled reports of classified military
information.
