More Mad Zoning: Permit Denied For Mosque In West Rogers Park (Chicago)

Permit Denied For Mosque In West Rogers Park - cbs2chicago.com:
"CHICAGO (CBS) ― A permit has been denied to open a mosque at this site in West Rogers Park, where a hot dog restaurant previously stood.

It is an empty restaurant in the West Rogers Park neighborhood. Some wanted to turn into a mosque. Business leaders and the city apparently don't agree. CBS 2's Vince Gerasole reports.

It sounds a bit like the controversy over the proposed mosque in New York near where the Twin Towers fell. Perhaps at first glance, but not when you scratch beneath the surface.

We're hearing from the local chamber of commerceand alderman's office that the city has denied a special use permit that would allow a mosque to replace a shut down hot dog grill.

It's based on the need to generate tax revenue on the former site of the original Fluky's and later U Lucky Dawg, at 6821 N. Western Ave."
Another problem with zoning. Different than New York where a the runaround for a Church to rebuild is nearing the decade mark. This time it is Chicago refusing to allow a mosque due to some zoning excuse.

In the future, zoning is on its way out.

Slashdot | Scott Adams On the Difficulty of Building a 'Green' Home

Slashdot | Scott Adams On the Difficulty of Building a 'Green' Home:

"'Scott Adams built himself a new house with the goal of making it as 'green' as possible, and detailed his experience for those interested in following in his missteps. Quoting: '... So the architect — and later your building engineer, too — each asks you to sign a document saying you won't sue them when beavers eat a load-bearing wall and your entire family is crushed by forest debris. You make the mistake of mentioning this arrangement to your family, and they leave you. But you are not deterred because you're saving the planet, damn it. You'll get a new family. A greener one. Your next hurdle is the local planning commission. They like to approve things that are similar to things they've approved before. To do otherwise is to risk unemployment. And the neighbors don't want to live next to a house that looks like a compost pile. But let's say, for the sake of this fascinating story, that everyone in the planning commission is heavily medicated with medical marijuana and they approve your project over the objections of all of your neighbors, except for the beavers, who are suspiciously flexible. Now you need a contractor who is willing to risk his career to build this cutting-edge structure. Good luck with that.''"
Suki Series tie-in:  Northern Virginia has eliminated most zoning requirements. Building engineering has advanced and "recycling" is market driven.

Reason Takes On Government Property Restrictions!

Yes, at long last, Reason has found a reason to speak out about unfair restrictions against property owners. Unfortunatly, they are taking up the cause to give a hand to Canadians feeling oppression while they still only give the finger to Manhattanites who do not subscribe to the current cosmotarian faith fads. Even communist Poland gets a shot below.

Sorry, but Our Zoning Regulations Forbid You From Celebrating Your Freedom - Hit & Run : Reason Magazine

For 10 years, libertarian activist and scholar Peter Jaworski has thrown an annual summer seminar and party on the Clarington, Ontario property owned by his parents, Marta and Lech. The Liberty Summer Seminar typically features speeches from libertarian activists and scholars followed by live music and food. This year Peter's parents, who fled to Canada from communist Poland in the 1980s, face a $50,000 fine for violating local zoning laws.

Islam vs. Other Religions at Ground Zero, NYC and the MSM

Following up on Suki's earlier post: The Greenroom God and Man at Ground Zero

Notice anything interesting about the following links? They are the top ones from a Google News search for St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Manhattan:

Leading article: Mr Obama stands up for tolerance

(mainstream UK news, does not mention the Church at all)

Mosque Moves Forward, Yet Church in Limbo

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which once sat right across the street from the World Trade Center, was crushed under the weight of the collapse of Tower Two on September 11, 2001. St. Nicholas was the only church to be lost in the attacks, and nine years later, while City of New York officials are busy removing every impediment to the building of the Cordoba mosque two blocks from the site, St. Nicholas’ future remains unclear.
Human Events is not that mainstream.

God and Man at Ground Zero

The one Suki blogged and Hot Air is not exactly mainstream either.

Church Near Ground Zero Asking For Attention

Here we go, MyFOX is a little closer.

Up at the top, the paid news links, a Washington Post article comes up, by accident, because a blog commentator mentions the St. Nicholas Church that was destroyed by Muslims in Europe. Interesting parallel to the one destroyed by jihadists Muslims in Manhattan.

Here is the scoop. The arrogant controllers of power in New York City have been preventing the reconstruction of the Saint Nicholas Church for almost ten years.  As soon as a questionable imam wants to put a "cultural center" within stoning distance of Ground Zero, every zoning obstacle is removed and they get the green light. Then Obama sends the questionable imam on a federal paid world tour to raise an additional $100 million for the project.

The Greek Orthodox project, on the other hand, already has pledges and donations from around the world and are ready to build, as soon as they get permission from Big Brother.

Too bad, in the eyes of Big Brothers Bloomberg and Obama, "zoning fairness" means Muslims first, at government expense.

The Greenroom God and Man at Ground Zero

The Greenroom: God and Man at Ground Zero:
"There are two relevant tales of Christian developments near Ground Zero. One involves a Greek Orthodox church, St. Nicholas’, which was crushed by the collapse of WTC Tower Two on 9/11. St. Nicholas’ Church was across the street from the World Trade Center. In 2008, a deal was announced with the New York Port Authority to rebuild the church two blocks from its original site. But civil authorities objected to the church’s plans for a larger structure, with a dome and spire in the Greek Orthodox tradition. Their express concern was that the church not be taller than the World Trade Center Memorial.

There is no apparent concern about the Park 51 Islamic center being taller than the WTC Memorial (it is). It will not be built as a wholly new structure, of course. But on the other hand, the commercial skyscraper planned by the Port Authority will be a new structure, and it will tower over the WTC Memorial. The principles at work appear to be as follows: new commercial structures may be taller than the Memorial. An Islamic group may occupy a building that is taller than the Memorial and devote it to a religious purpose. But a Christian structure may not be built taller than the Memorial."

Suki series tie-in: Islamic fundies are pretty much isolated to Iran and the West Bank. Zoning is out in most of East Coast USA.

For the Record: My View on Property Rights

I am generally against zoning regulations, but I am sure there are instances where they could be fair to the property owner. I just cannot think of any. If you don't like what your neighbor is doing with their property, as long as it is staying on their property, then buy them out or look the other way.

Big cities should not be such a difficult hurdle to apply what is stated above. I am not so Libertarian as to believe we should not have public roads or utilities rights-of-way either (as my esteemed blog partner has argued for over ten years that I have known him).

As for the so-called "Ground Zero Mosque", that whole issue is a mess.  First, I do not begrudge the insensitive Islamic assholes who decided to name the place their right to put a mosque on their own property (btw, Mohammed sucks too). I do have an issue with New York City and Mayor Bloomberg (who sucks almost as much as Mohammed) turning their convoluted zoning laws upside down in order to pave the way, in record time, for this project. This is the only time in his reign as Mayor that Bloomberg has given so much as a nod to individual property rights. If I suspected this was any sort of epiphany on the part of the Mayor, I would be applauding. In this case, I am just waiving a finger.

Back to the Muslim assholes naming this monstrosity the "Ground Zero Mosque", they have as much desire to bring the various 'sides' together as the people of the Westboro Baptist Church do, and lesbians probably have just as much of a chance to be married in either location, after gay marriage makes its way through the courts.  Part of property rights is property responsibility. Being a good neighbor is in there somewhere.

I blame the nanny-state mentality as much as anything else for the decline in neighborliness. When the government started pretending that they would take care of everything, many individuals decided that they would take care of nothing. Even worse, if their neighbor was not doing what they wanted, they get the police power of the government to attack their neighbors into submission.

Rant over. Build what you want on your own property, don't be an ass and government, GET OFF MY YARD!

The above are my personal views. I blog here as the primary character development assistant for the Suki book projects. If you are interested in character attitudes about this topic, browse books ;)
