W: What do you make of the recent UFO sightings over Iran? (The Iranian authorities even claim to have shot one down last year). The unidentified objects are described as glowing or having lights on them, do this rule out secret US spy drones?

MP: There was a UFO wave over Iran in 2004 when I first began researching Mirage Men -- many of them, not surprisingly, seen over their burgeoning nuclear facilities. The Iranian Air Force announced that they'd be having a UFO conference to investigate the sightings, but I never heard any more about that. It's interesting to see how in Iran, just as in the UK or the US, initial reports of lights in the sky will quite quickly transform into more dramatic stories -- the second wave of sightings in 2004 involved strange robot creatures with claw arms hovering in the skies. This kind of escalation is a natural part of the folkloric narrative process, though it's also possible that these stories were faked by witnesses or journalists to sell newspapers, or were even planted by Iran's enemies to stir up unease.
Bright lights don't necessarily rule out spy planes or drones, maybe they were there to distract attention from another covert operation. Or perhaps the purpose was to generate unease and fear amongst the population with the eventual goal of destabilising the regime. The US planned to fly "ghost planes" over Libya in 1986 for similar reasons, though the project was never carried out.

"The beings have repeated their efforts in the US and have been active since 1948, the men said, and accused the respective governments of trying to keep the information secret.

The unlikely claims were compiled by six former US airmen and another member of the military who interviewed or researched the evidence of 120 ex-military personnel.
The information they have collected suggests that aliens could have landed on Earth as recently as seven years ago.

The men's aim is to press the two governments to recognise the long-standing extra-terrestrial visits as fact.

They are to be presented on Monday 27 September at a meeting in Washington.
One of the men, Capt Robert Salas, said: "The US Air Force is lying about the national security implications of unidentified aerial objects at nuclear bases and we can prove it."
He said said he witnessed such an event first-hand on March 16, 1967, at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana which housed Minuteman nuclear missiles."

CPT Salas' press conference is today at 1230, National Press Club.
This is not the first time the Captain has done this stunt, as the HaroldTribune notes, he tried this in 2001 and got to meet Larry King:

But speaking out nine years ago wasn’t a total loss, considering how his example emboldened other former USAF operatives like Bruce Fenstermacher — a Minuteman III launch control officer in the Seventies — to step up with their own stories about UFOs snooping around Uncle Sam’s WMDs. On Monday afternoon, Fenstermacher will join Salas and five more veterans at the same venue in yet another (probably doomed) effort to stoke a little interest in our strategic vulnerabilities. All told, UFOs and Nukes author/event organizer Robert Hastings has vetted well over 115 veterans with individual pieces of this disturbing puzzle.

"In order to prevent a mass panic, Winston Churchill kept top secret a close encounter between a World War II pilot and an unexplained flying object, newly unclassified documents reveal.

The British prime minister said the unexplained incident should be kept secret for 50 years, fearing it would provoke a 'mass panic.'

The claim was discovered in files newly unclassified by the British Ministry of Defense. It came from a scientist who said his grandfather was one of Churchill's bodyguards.

According to the documents, details of the coverup emerged when the man wrote to the government in 1999 seeking to find out more about the incident. He described how his grandfather, who served with the Royal Air Force (RAF) in the war, was present when Churchill and U.S. General Dwight Eisenhower discussed how to deal with the UFO encounter.

The man, who is not named in the files, said Churchill was reported to have exclaimed, 'This event should be immediately classified since it would create mass panic amongst the general population -- and destroy one's belief in the church (sic).'"
