First Arrests Under Virginia Smoking Law
"Lynchburg, VA - The smoking law that prohibits lighting up in Virginia restaurants has had its first violators.
Authorities in Falls Church, Virginia arrested and fined 13 people. Four arrests were owners and the other nine were customers caught in the act. The arrests came after months of complaints from other customers.
No arrests have been made in Lynchburg just yet. Lynchburg Police said enforcing the law starts with restaurant owners.
'If they address it and ask the person to leave, and the person complies, the issue is dealt with. If not, we could address for trespassing,' said Captain Todd Swisher with the Lynchburg police department.
Swisher said if police get complaints about a restaurant allowing smoking, local health officials will take over.
According to the Health Department's website, fines from breaking the law go towards the Virginia Health Care Fund."In the future, the establishment owner will decide the smoking policy. In John's books, Virginia leaves that policy to the establishment . DC has strict rules about smoking anywhere.

Alleged scope smuggler Anna Fermanova laughs off comparison to Russian spy Anna Chapman in NYC court
Anna Fermanova loves New York - but finds all that talk about her sexy Slavic namesake a big joke.
The Latvian lovely flew to town to face charges yesterday of smuggling sniper scopes, but sniffed at comparisons to red-hot Russian spy Anna Chapman.
'I love New York,' she told the Daily News after a hearing in Brooklyn federal court - and before heading to Manhattan for a fancy lunch.
'It's always nice to come here!'
Her lawyer, Scott Palmer, said his client found being branded Chapman's smoking-hot second coming hilarious.
'She laughed it off,' he said after she was rearraigned and her $50,000 bail continued after a procedural hearing.

I shall recycle my comment:
I'm deathly afraid of fourth-hand smoke, which is the use by blog comment avatar of virtual tobacco products. And fifth-hand smoke, which is watching a movie, reading a book, or listening to a song about tobacco products. And sixth-hand smoke, which reading a review of any movie, book, or song that mentions tobacco products.
I have a Federal grant to discover seventh-hand smoke and how to combat it.

I think there's a valid concern here. Children watching Avatar in 3D are going to see Ripley seemingly puffing on a cig right next to them in the theater. And we all know that virtual secondhand smoke is exactly as dangerous as the real thing.

I should cease being amazed . . .
I should cease being amazed, but I won't any time soon.
Sitting in a very nice restaurant, at the bar, for about three hours I have had:
Several people come in, sit close to me and my smouldering cigarette, pick up the large paper menus and "waft" my smoke away. No shortage of seating in non-smoking, father down the bar, at tables in the same area, or in the non-smoking establishments of Ted's Montana Grill and Ruth's Chris Steakhouse.
A party of four who seemed to think the stools are bolted to the floor, who had to "butt" some guy right against me, while there was plenty of room to their left.
A group of women behind me, who decided the one of the greatest girth had to sit in the aisle right behind me, so everybody passing had to climb my back.
Positive note, Suki IV is in final edit. Wrote "The End" over an hour ago.

Starbucks Customers so Suck!
What the hell is wrong with the people at my Starbucks? I know they are bad all over, especially down in John's area, but here? AGH!
Don't get me wrong, I heart the staff! And I don't say that just because I have seen Fight Club either. But these damn customers, can't they figure out what the hell they want?
Sitting here fussing with the Suki book character profile and general websurfing I have heard "um" about 1000x more than in an Obama press conference.
How about blasting your voice a bit louder and wandering around all over running people over trying to figure out which bottled something you want?
Is "brother" something white haired 40 something Caucasian loud guys MUST say in every other sentence?
Why does he use a cell phone if people can hear him three blocks away just fine?
BECAUSE THE SMOKING AREA IS OUTSIDE! I would not be smoking by the OUTSIDE ASHTRAY if I could smoke inside. If you don't like my smoke hang a fucking sign around your neck and stay the hell away from me.
I do not speak "Asian". You obviously speak 'European'.
I "got that accent" in Virginia. Yes, we have existed there for quite a while. I think before Pearl Harbor, but my family only got there after Vietnam and they are not from there either.
No, I am American. My parents are from other countries.
If they had pizza it would be in the big glass case.
If they are out of something it is not "in the back", they are out of it there too.
No, my laptop is not for public use. Same as my lap.
Thanks for coming up and trying to sit at my table while I am busy on my computer! Of all of the empty seats in this place you chose my lap as your favorite spot!
Yes, it is still "my spot" when I am gone to the ladies room or out smoking.
I must have heard six people ask what kind of cheese was in some CREAM CHEESE pastry thingie. I always wished the staff would reply with "Provolone" or something.
