Illinois becomes haven of choice for politicians in exile

Most should be familiar with the Democrat caucus of the Wisconsin Senate fleeing to Illinois to derail the democratic process of debate and voting on legislation.  Now, Indiana Democrats are fleeing to Illinois for the same reason.

I have heard some well informed, professional media speculation that Cairo, Illinois is being prepared for Muhammad Hosni Sayyid Mubarak.  Peoria might be a good spot for Moammar Gadhafi, but he may feel more at home in Chicago, primarily because of the similar governmental system that Chicago shares with Tripoli.

"House Democrats are leaving the state rather than vote on anti-union legislation, The Indianapolis Star has learned. 

A source said Democrats are headed to Illinois, though it was possible some also might go to Kentucky. They need to go to a state with a Democratic governor to avoid being taken into police custody and returned to Indiana.

The House was came into session this morning, with only two of the 40 Democrats present. Those two were needed to make a motion, and a seconding motion, for any procedural steps Democrats would want to take to ensure Republicans don’t do anything official without quorum."

No accurate reports on Democrats bringing their private Italian Commando guards to Illinois.

Does Rahm Emanuel Meet Residency Requirement for Chicago Mayor's Race?

A discussion on the Roe Conn show, about Chicago residency requirements for running for office, this hour is quite interesting.

The basics:
You must be reside in Chicago for twelve months before the election. The requirement is different than for voting in Chicago, Illinois. Voters need only be registered to vote there and have an address there, even if they are away from the city, like in Washington, DC. However, there is a law (specific citation not given) that has been on the books since the 1800s requiring mayoral candidates to actually live in Chicago for 12 months before the election. There was some discussion of the terminology in the law.

Blagojevich Verdict (see scorecard for more detail): Governor Rod Blagojevich Guilty on One Count
Lied to federal government, count 24: Guilty, the only unanimous count. Five-year maximum sentence. Probable re-trial on other 23 charges.

Jury does not need to decide on forfeiture counts and is free to go.

Judge plans to call a mistrial on the rest of the counts. Robert and Rod will be retried.

Bloging the Blago Trial

Business Week reports: The federal jury for former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich, and his brother Rob, has informed the judge that they have only reached agreement on two counts, none of them are of the eleven wirefraud counts the former governor is accused of committing.

The article does not mention which brother the charges that the jury agree on apply to.
 


Series tie-in: In the 2030s, the government has far less power and politicians cannot use the public fisc for their own benefit to the extent that they use it today.
