Description

Imagine a future where paid companionship is legal.

Imagine a future where recreational drug use is legal.

Imagine a future where people negotiate their own pay rates for any way they wish to sell their talents and services.

Imagine a future where bill collectors are feared more than the government.

Now imagine the characters from the first Suki Adult Romance Series living in that world. Not quite a Libertarian Utopia, not quite a dystopia either.

Welcome to Suki's new world. Is it real, or is it just a dream?

Suki With A Twist - Part One Synopsis

Suki With A Twist: Part One is an Urban Fantasy Romance, with a hint of Science Fiction set in the early 2030’s Northern Virginia. Both the laws and society have evolved in a more open and libertarian direction than what we are used to today. Recreational drug use and prostitution are open, common, and legal.

The story opens with lavish office party. Jung, is president of the party planning firm and is watching over the operation. China, a beautiful young Asian woman and a Vice-President of the planning firm for the party, is on a date with Dennis Bohannon, the chief partner of the law firm throwing the party and stays obediently at his side.

The true nature of the date becomes apparent in the Presidential Suite of the Ritz. China is a paid date for the boss, commanding the highest rates on the East Coast. Her mother's business is the most expensive full-service firm. The story continues with a detailed view of the night through China's eyes to the next morning, in the “safe suite” where all of the overnight workers change back to their regular look, and we discover that China is the professional name for the main character, Suki.

Suki is troubled, at the age of twenty-four she has never been in a true romantic relationship and that is the root of her problem. She has only worked for her mother, she spends money wildly and she is beginning to hate her job. Through the next chapters the main characters are introduced. Jung has an active, erotic, social life and a hands-on business approach. One of her “pets” is a man that she has visited weekly for several years as his Domme, but he is normally sexually Dominant with others. Patricia and Samantha, a polyamorous married couple, are well known in local Domination & submission social circles, and they try to help Suki straighten herself out. Both have senior professional positions and they also moonlight for Jung's party business as companions like Suki, but only to pay off their house.

Jung knows someone who might be good for her daughter and sets the wheels in motion for them to meet. One little problem, John is a man that Jung has had ongoing Domination encounters with for years. Suki guesses this and agrees to meet him anyway without telling him that she is Jung’s daughter.

John and Suki hit it off immediately, right down to their mutual sexual deviations, and they discover Suki has a natural talent for modeling when John has her stand-in as his car model at an auction on their date to San Francisco. Suki has an opportunity at a new career and relationship, better than a dream, but it also creates severe problems when she returns to Virginia.

Soon-to-be published Suki With A Twist: Part Two begins just after Part One ends, with Samantha and Suki preparing to work a small private party.

"Suki I" Amazon Bestsellers Rank: #139,527 on Kindle

Suki is an attractive, single young professional Libertarian, performing advanced technology research and looking for a bright, nice, acceptable boyfriend. Most of the time she works in her mother’s party planning office as Project Manager/Executive Secretary and all-around technology administrator.

Suki has an advanced education by 2032 standards, but it is not much more advanced that the top 25% of her peers from high school who also earned PhDs. She started college early, like many of her high school classmates.

She has experimented with many things, common for a woman of her time, for most anybody of her age, and she is growing out of that.

John is a retired Army Lieutenant Colonel, former defense contractor, current classic car creator and "small L libertarian." He has a comfortable condominium, a nice one-man-operation garage, one true best friend and never seems to meet a stranger.

He is a bit of a solitary man. After his son became a military lawyer and “left the nest”, John started tutoring subjects that he had taught his son and had tutored while he was in college, as a productive distraction from his business. It is also something he can do one-on-one, rather than having to deal with large groups.

John prefers women his own age or older and would be thrilled if he finds a woman who just wants to be nice to him.

Atlas Shrugged is now more popular abroad than in the USA.

The USA is recovering from the hyperinflation of the early part of the century. The rest of the world is rapidly adopting the free market and the rule of law.

Northern Virginia is slowly leaning toward libertarian style laws, taxes and freedoms, much to the dislike of the establishment in Washington, DC, right across the river.

In Virginia, the smoking policy in businesses is set by the owner. So is the concealed weapons carry policy. DC is the opposite.

Federal recreational drug laws have been all but eliminated. Virginia has eliminated most of theirs. Prostitution laws are largely ignored in cities across the country. In Virgina as long as it is off the street it is tolerated. DC continues to issue tickets for suspected prostitution in public areas.

BDSM is more common in fashion and in commercial establishment themes, but the practice still has a slight stigma.

The story is set in the early 2030s. For more details about the background, see http://www.SukiSite.com and order the paperbacks at http://sukiproject.blogspot.com/p/order-suki-series-paperbacks.html

Suki I is the story of Suki finding the type of man that she really needs. Approx. 304 paperback pages.

Suki II: Sunshine Returns ( http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002EL4EAK ) picks up where Suki I ends.

Suki II: Sunshine Returns follows the couple through their brutal kidnapping and escape from one of Suki's ex-lovers and her best friend. Sunshine and Patricia misuse powerful drugs against the couple to force Suki's marriage to Sunshine in order to steal her wealth through the court system. The modernized court system, with electronic marriage and divorce systems, aids them in their ploy. John saves the day, but there is another problem. Suki's knowledge of biometric identification systems could be exploited for financial gain by their attackers. John's son, Tag, and Suki's best friend, Samantha, meet and hit it off immediately.
Suki III: Never Let Us End reveals John, his history and background when it comes back to threaten the couple. His ex-girlfriend Nancy discovers his new relationship with Suki and decides she wants John back. She is the secretary to the couple's therapist and has access to certain chemicals that are still controlled. In an elaborate plot to sever John and Suki's relationship, Nancy takes control of Suki and uses Suki's hypnosis skill to take control of John. Suki's expert marksmanship skill saves John's life and her experience with recreational drugs is key to his recovery.

Suki IV: Finally A Vacation (War With Iran) begins quietly enough with the couple taking a long vacation, at the insistence of their therapist and Suki's mother, Jung. Suki has a few surprises in store for him. The pilots of their charter flight were friends of John's late father, Josef, and their lunch companions are allied generals, both friends of John since they were all young Lieutenants. Suki gets to hear more about John's antics from when he was her age. As they make their way to the safety of Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, John notices the military activity is not normal. Something big is going on and his son has just arrived in Tel Aviv. The world has not been at war since Suki was a child and John was fighting the battles. John selected Eglin for its superior safety and excellent trap and skeet ranges. It is also the 2030s headquarters of a Joint Logistics Command that needs the assistance of people with John and Suki's backgrounds in Logistics and Biometrics to defeat the automated systems Iran uses.

Its not all war and SCIF romance. After the invasion begins, the couple is free to leave and travels to Maynardville, Tennessee for Suki to meet John's mother and Suki gets a last name, for the first time in her life.

The Way I Write the Future

I really want to say I just sit down and write what I think things will be like tempered with how I would like them to become, but that is not accurate. I do a lot of research, with lots of help since I began writing the Suki series last year.  So, let me try to break it down a little.
When I was younger, by definition my body of experience was limited. I could read about past events, but tying them together and noticing trends usually (always?) resulted in incorrect predictions. I always found 'futuristic accuracy' to be important.  Now that I am pushing fifty and still the news junkie I was as a kid, trends are easier to notice. One of them is the liberalization of society. No pejorative tone there either and there is no arguing around it. North American society has been on a continued social liberalization trend since Columbus and there is no sign of that changing. South American, European and East Asian societies, save for a few pockets, are trending the same way. Not going to speculate on Africa, I haven’t followed events there that much.

With that backdrop, I can speculate or even predict that all recreational drug use will continue, increase, become more common, less stigma, etc. I think back to a William F. Buckley, Jr. speech where he mentions how society had moved in the aspect of litter, drugs and sex. Not quoting exactly, but the punch line was to the effect: Today an unmarried couple might smoke a joint on a boat then have sex with a condom, but it would be a ‘sin’ to toss the used condom or roach into the sea afterward. In my futures, any recreational drug you hear of now is available and either legal or tolerated. In the original series, the couple abstains from all of it. In Suki With A Twist, they are both responsible users of many things.

That is the kind of idea that I go with for the future. Multiple partner relationships appear to be on the fringe today, on the surface, but over the years I finally noticed how common it actually is in reality. In the future, I write, that is a common and open practice. Not something that interests me at all in my personal life, just something I do not see going onto decline. It also made for something to make the John and Suki characters unique against the other characters. They are the only characters in my books that seek a monogamous relationship and back it up by the way they act. I got most of my future society feedback from Derek Walker, named on sever book covers as a contributor. He got me to rethink a few things and helped with the stories too.

In fashion, I have noticed things from the fetish world become mainstream, especially in cities. Necklaces that look like chokers, or “slave” collars, extreme spike heel shoes for the women, more corset-style waists on outfits, the list goes on. Not seeing that change either, seems to be accelerating now. Sometimes I will pick a societal rule and carry it into the future with no idea if it will continue or die. I remember when it was a big deal for women to wear pants in the workplace, now it is common. Someone mentioned a “rule” for women just before I began writing Suki I, legs always covered in the office. Had heard of it before too, about ten years earlier. So I tossed that in, just as the “crazy pattern hose” fad erupted. When I was in my 20’s there was a lace-pattern hosiery fad that came and went, decades later fishnets are common and now odd crisscross patterns are everywhere. They get a mention, not going away in the future.

Imagine if the color of your clothes could change on the fly? I wondered if it was possible and discovered electrochromic polymers, but today they cannot be spun into a fabric. Pretty sure someone will figure out how in the next 20 years and some men, many women, will be wearing color morphing outfits.

A trap I did not want to fall into was underestimating the progress of gadgetry. And I fell right into it in the first series, I think I fixed it in the second. NO FLYING CARS! I knew you were thinking that and I don’t use them. I despise time travel too, unless it is a story about time travel. Otherwise, it always comes across as a cheap device for the writer to escape a corner they have written themselves into. I am looking at you, Star Trek. I concentrate on the devices people use every day, but I did sort of cheat. I gave Suki and her mother hypnosis abilities, the classic kind that some people think works today. It did come in handy several places and backfires badly early. When the couple is severely traumatized, having Jung as an expert hypnotherapist, in addition to other skills, comes in very handy.

Something I think I underestimated in the original series was computing interfaces. I have two varieties of “phones,” something that is traditional like the iPhone of today, but with more computing power, that John and Suki’s mother, Jung, use and then I have “gogs” that Suki and her peers use. Gogs are simply glasses with transparent LED screens and earbuds for sound.

After more research between books and a few new technology press releases, I decided that those are just around the corner and will be ‘ancient’ by the 2030’s. Saran and Suki helped jump my mind forward when they came up with deeply inserted earbuds and contacts with video. I added smaller, powerful computers with massive memory, also small. I needed a power source and don’t see batteries really increasing in storage capacity for what I wanted, so I reduced the power consumption of the devices to work with a thermocouple, using the body heat of the user, and some chemistry for the screens, using the saline of the eye as a reactive power source.

Something else I updated in Suki With A Twist, doing laundry. John’s big “single chamber” washer/dryer senses what has been placed in it, does an analysis, applies the right temperatures and detergents and runs. That is another trend that is never going to stop, appliances moving towards effortlessness. Compare a VCR of old with one now.

As far as the law goes, I am a less is better sort of person. Being a Libertarian and preferring the founder’s original intent of the Constitution, a Libertopia of that sort would be fun to write. But I tempered it with what I notice happens with the law. The place where I illustrate it most obviously is in Suki II: Sunshine Returns. The couple’s attackers use marriage, paternity and the court system to hatch a plot to steal the couple’s money. It was surprisingly simple. The only thing I see getting streamlined for citizens the legal process is filing actions with them, so I made it possible to electronically marry, with same-sex marriage legal too. Getting divorced? Electronically file that too. Equitable property division? Not so fast! Especially if the “injured” party in the relationship is the only one showing up in court.

Matters of health are advancing rapidly. What if an embryo could be “harvested” from the birth mother after implantation and transferred to a surrogate? Then imagine the risk a wealthy male would be taking whenever he had sex with a woman who could be fertile. Now, what court wouldn’t enforce child support against the man? They show no signs of changing there, even if the woman tricks the man into pregnancy. I do use genetic testing to prove whom the baby belongs to and that might improve in the future.

As for the bondage/discipline aspects of the story, I have no idea of that is going to be more common in the future than it is today. I just gave the likes to the couple to make more exciting private scenes with them. They do stick with the “sane set” limits, safe-words, etc. in both series.

That’s all for now!

PS, Suki II: Sunshine Returns, is still available as a free PDF download.  I think it might be cheaper to order the paperback instead of downloading and printing, the option is yours. Can read on Scribd now too.

Suki With A Twist: Part One

The draft for Suki With A Twist: Part One is with three of my proof readers.  Initial response from one is it is "rough" and needs to be fleshed out.  I need to get more details from her while I make another pass through it and add the corrections another proofreader noticed.

Sounds like this one reads faster.  Both said they couldn't put it down and both are familiar with the other books.  Might hear something from Derek today, for a third opinion.

I had to split this work into two books because of a constraint I gave myself.  The romance readers like their books between 20,000 and 40,000 words.  Even though this is action/adventure/sci-fi, it has a heavy romance theme and the people I know who read a lot of that like my stories too.

So, when I was approaching 35,000 words I noticed there was no way this story would be finished before 40,000.  I modified the outline and continued the story until I reached the limit, then re-worked the end of "Part One" and the beginning of "Part Two."

Part one does have the right elements, in my opinion, to be a complete story, just not the whole story of a relationship.  When "Part Two" is complete, the reader will have the whole story of the relationship between John and Suki.

The term "With A Twist" is in the title as both a description and a warning.  This set of two books is a departure from the origonal series, more like a bizarro paralell story.  The same core characters are present, but some are in different lines of work than they were in the original Suki series.  I tried to keep them all with the same personalities, reacting the same way to things as they would have reacted in the main series, but they are in much different situations.  Also, I set the beginning of the story about one year earlier than Suki I.  The only clues I left for that are the ages of John and Suki.

As soon as I read the fan fiction that Suki and Sarah wrote, I embraced it as part of the main series and I continue using their gadgetry in the Suki With A Twist books. Update: ISBN is 1451551827 and EAN-13 is 9781451551822 have just been assigned to this book.

Will start working on Suki VI, or whatever I name the next book of the main Suki series, after I get these two finished and available in paperback.

Suki's Avatar Movie Review

Great movie, one of my favorites ever!

18 December 2009 (USA), written and directed by James Cameron

Viewed in IMAX 3D, Cherry Hill, NJ with two friends who know military stuff.  Note: Military stuff below provided by input from those friends and their friends, because I am a lil clueless there.

IMDB has the basic plot description:
A paraplegic marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.
My description:  A tribal culture clash between humans of Earth and the native Na’vi of the moon Pandora over the control of that world’s resources.  Each side values different resources resulting in violent clashes over use of the commons.  This is a decidedly anti-libertarian story with the human miners portrayed as murderous thieves versus the natives as communal stewards of nature.  I thought all of the humans were contractors, but IMDB has many of them being military, so there is a heavy dose of rent seeking on the part of the humans too.

Let me save all of you the time that I wasted thinking about different things I noticed in the movie that seemed odd.  The Pandorapedia has an explanation for just about everything I was going to comment on as being strange, like the choice of aircraft that the mining company uses.  Additionally, IMDB has goofs and things confused with goofs too.
For example: I thought it odd that the small Scorpion gunships would still be using 20th/21st century technology so far in the future.  But my friends noted that they seemed to fit with the mission of the miners and the threats they faced.  Pandorapedia confirmed that and had gobs more info like what the rotor system is called:
Dual co-axial ducted-fan rotor systems with a total of four 3-bladed prop-rotors.  Twin Magnussen KE-76 turbine generators driving counter-rotating annular ceramic motors.
BTW, guy friend knew the generic description off the top of his head.  The distraction here?  Unless they are made of ‘upsidasium’ they must be fueled by ‘undepletium’ because they are always fully loaded and hovering.  Oh, the miners are strip mining for ‘unobtainium’ (yes, this is true) and that it the only thing I can think of in any James Cameron movie that I cannot forgive him for ;)  Well, maybe 'molecular acid' too.

Since this is a James Cameron film, much of the gadgetry is similar to his other movies and Sigourney Weaver isn’t Ripley, she is sort-of Ripley renamed Dr. Grace Augustine.  Back to the tech, Cameron uses various display technology for the workers in this film.  Some have “surround” holographic displays, most have clear flat panel touch screens, but they all are well thought-out for functionally.  Of course, the big fancy 3D display is in the mine boss’ headquarters and he is not really good at operating it.

My favorite part of the story?  The ROMANCE of course!  Actually, right up there with the display technology, but I am odd that way.  Jake is a former Marine Corporal who lost the use of his legs in battle.  Not that cute, in my opinion, either.  He is the twin brother of a scientist who was working on the Avatar project, i.e., flesh and blood remotely operated beings that are very expensive.  The scientist brother died before the mission, so Jake was asked to fill in for him, since he is an identical twin.  I really did not like the way he was portrayed as “stupid,” like the rest of the mining company employees.  However, it dawned on me before I asked a stupid question, it does make the story work and makes him more heroic in the end.  His Avatar is a lot hotter than he is.

When the security chief (Colonel Miles Quaritch) discovers an Avatar operator is a former Marine, he sees an opportunity to use Jake to infiltrate the Na’vi and see if there is anything they will take to move from their home so that it can be mined for the massive unobtainium deposits beneath it.  Quaritch's job is made easier by the condescending manner of Dr. Augustine towards Jake.

As we get to know Jake, he demonstrates boyish, childish, behavior that might be cute back on earth, but in a lab where he is first getting to operate his Avatar it borders offensive and dangerous.  Not offensive as in “Cameron, what were you thinking?”  The actors are convincingly offensive in their roles, as I think was intended.  Even more offensive is the lax lab procedure.  Jake is given almost no prep or briefing on what to expect.  He is getting to use legs for the first time in who-knows-when and NOBODY told him what to expect, or what the initial evaluation procedure was going to be.  So, he tries out his new legs in the Avatar body, wrecks a lab and goes outside to run, like a little kid.  It doesn’t get better for a while.

When the Avatar team finally gets out into the forest Jakes childish behavior is almost his end.  He has that annoying boy trait of touching anything he sees, even if he has no idea if it will eat him, or poison him.  Like an unmannered child in a museum.  While he is supposed to be the armed guard for the team he wanders off, touching things, until he finds something that wants to eat him!  Several, actually, so he gets chased through the forest and almost dies escaping.

While trying to survive the night alone he is spotted by one of the Na’vi, Neytiri.  She is lovely, graceful and lethal with her bow and poison tipped arrows.  As she stalks the intruder and is about to shoot, a sign comes to her that she shouldn't kill him and the man-boy-sitting begins.  Other than sparing him she really just wants him to leave her forest and she does note aloud that he is like a baby.  Noisy, messing with everything, etc., as he clumsily follows her graceful lead through the wood and she is eventually given the task, by her mother, one of the tribal elders, to educate Jake on their ways, which she objects to like a child.

Neytiri isn’t your average Princess.  She is an expert in everything around her.  She can kill or tame anything around her.  Like Laura Croft of the wilderness, without a gun.

By the time Jake is about to take his “final exam,” something else that can kill him, she is rooting for him as her warrior brother is rooting against him.  Then he dies.  Just kidding!  The couple flies together on large reptiles and start getting romantic, after almost being eaten by a giant flying reptile.  Jake gets to do the ceremony for becoming a tribe member and I am not going to spoil how the couple actually decides to be a couple, but I wanted to cry, it was so well done.

Neytiri saves Jake several times.  She is so badass!  When Jake is “unconscious” (Avatar link shut down) she crouches over him with her knife drawn to protect him from any threat.

The romance is broken for a while when Jake tries to warn the Na’vi that they must leave or the “sky people” (humans) are going to kill them all to take the unobtainium that is below their sacred trees.  Again, the people back at base didn’t help him much with how to do something like that.  He messes it up, is seen as an infiltrator and not truly one with the Na’vi, Neytiri dumps him and the security people shut off the Avatars.
Not to worry, Jake proves himself by showing everybody he really is trying to save them, asks for the right help and get it.  In a fantastic twist of the Knight on the white horse, he comes back to the tribe in the way of their legends and leads them against the miners.

I hope I didn't spoil too much.  Now for the bits I really didn’t like, which is less than it looks like all written down.

I thought all the humans on the Pandora were contractors and the ones with guns were ex-military.  IMDB says some are military.  If that’s right, then they are using the military for something a mining company should be hiring the Space Pinkerton’s to do.  Major rent-seeking by the mining company too.

Everybody with a gun is portrayed as stupid, evil, an asshole or all three.  Even when scientists are given guns, they become stupid.  Trust me, there are plenty of smart gun loving scientists today.  Maybe it is different in the future.

Mining operations are run by evil incompetents who think shooting everybody is cheaper than any other course of action.  All they know how to do is mine and shoot.  They try other courses of action only as boilerplate for doing what they wanted to do anyway, bulldoze away the forest until they find the unobtainium.   I suppose a new conflict would have to be written if they did something unique, like digging tunnels with big nice future tunnel diggers (like the Channel Tunnel was dug with) to get the unobtainium and leave the beings above alone.

Floating mountains with gushing waterfalls.  They must be made of upsidasium and get monsoons when off camera.

Flying reptiles are able to grab Scorpion gunships and fling them to the ground.  Unless the gunships are also made of upsidasium, or at least lowmassium, they should be much heavier than the flying lizards.  As informed by others, they don’t use tail rotors so grabbing the tail doesn’t really do much if you have less mass and thrust than the Scorpion.

That is all for now.  I want to see it again, so I may be back for an update.
