Suki Series Books now at Park Sundries, Crystal City, Crystal Park III

I am proud to announce my latest sales partner: Park Sundries, Maynine, INC, Crystal Park III, 2231 Crystal Drive, Arlington, Virginia, 22202.  Located in the same courtyard as Chipotle.  They currently carry one copy each of Suki I, Suki II: Sunshine Returns, Suki III: Never Let Us End, Suki IV: Finally A Vacation (War With Iran) and Suki V: The Collection (first four novels in one volume).  Also, one copy of Suki With A Twist: Part One (An Alternate Future).

This is as near to "ground zero" as one can get in the novels, making it a very special location to me.  Suki and her mother's offices are one block south, on the 2300 block of Crystal Drive.

In Suki With A Twist: Part One, the spa Suki attends is nearby, she and her friends dine at the Steak House on the 11th floor of this entrance.  Her apartment is several blocks to the north, on the same side of the street.  In Suki I, she walks past this location from her mother's office on the way to the METRO station and she walks past it several other times, including a few times with John the morning after their first date.

Much of Suki III: Never Let Us End, occurs near here too.

Suki novels Sold Out at Plaza News

Plaza News in the Crystal City Underground (see map below) has sold out! They had paperback copies of Suki With A Twist: Part One and Suki I on July 15th 2010.  The Suki With A Twist paperback sold quickly. Not sure when Suki I sold, but it is gone now.

Will check with the lady of the store when she expects new copies to be delivered. If you are in Crystal City, Arlington, VA you can check too!

Anybody who has Kindle books out there, Amazon just made a few changes. Posting their email first and I will fill you in on what I did.

Step 2 is a little off. You are going to edit book details and read through everything. Make sure DRM is set for what you want for your book, and make sure all the other choices are correct.

When you accept the changes, THEN you get to make sure your books are available in the UK. They have also made the 70% royalty option available too. All but one of mine was eligable for the 70% royalty, so that was an easy choice.  One book, Suki V: The Collection, was priced above the range for 70%, so I dropped it from $15.69 to $9.69, resulting in a higher royalty for me and better value for my new readers.

I took the option of letting Amazon convert the US price to GBP, as I saw no need to price it differently in the UK.

Now I am waiting for Amazon to do its thing for the next "2 to 3 days" and hopefully everything will be available.

Suki in Great Falls

Adding a little spice to the restaurant scene, Suki Cafe, at 1229 10th Ave. S., started serving fresh sushi and tasty Thai food in May. Along with sushi rolls stuffed with tender tuna and smoked eel, the restaurant has options like beef teriyaki for the less adventurous in the group.

A big YEA for Hollywood!

'Pirates 4' and the search for natural breasts: Standard practice for period projects

There has been a buzz building around the news that Disney is looking for actresses with natural breasts for their upcoming Pirate movie.  From the story at the link, it is standard practice for period pieces, which is cool.  Especially cool for my natural sisters out there in actress/model world :) but I digress.

What struck me was that there was even a buzz about it, as if someone discovered 'the next new thing: Natural Breasts!' and others climbed aboard the smaller cup train for the amazing ride.  In John's Suki Series books he writes of the near-future society paying a premium on natural people.  When we were discussing that aspect he had the idea that surgical and genetic modifications would be come the norm and natural would be exotic.

Judging from this buzz, it sounds like he is on the right path.

Suki With A Twist: Part One

The draft for Suki With A Twist: Part One is with three of my proof readers.  Initial response from one is it is "rough" and needs to be fleshed out.  I need to get more details from her while I make another pass through it and add the corrections another proofreader noticed.

Sounds like this one reads faster.  Both said they couldn't put it down and both are familiar with the other books.  Might hear something from Derek today, for a third opinion.

I had to split this work into two books because of a constraint I gave myself.  The romance readers like their books between 20,000 and 40,000 words.  Even though this is action/adventure/sci-fi, it has a heavy romance theme and the people I know who read a lot of that like my stories too.

So, when I was approaching 35,000 words I noticed there was no way this story would be finished before 40,000.  I modified the outline and continued the story until I reached the limit, then re-worked the end of "Part One" and the beginning of "Part Two."

Part one does have the right elements, in my opinion, to be a complete story, just not the whole story of a relationship.  When "Part Two" is complete, the reader will have the whole story of the relationship between John and Suki.

The term "With A Twist" is in the title as both a description and a warning.  This set of two books is a departure from the origonal series, more like a bizarro paralell story.  The same core characters are present, but some are in different lines of work than they were in the original Suki series.  I tried to keep them all with the same personalities, reacting the same way to things as they would have reacted in the main series, but they are in much different situations.  Also, I set the beginning of the story about one year earlier than Suki I.  The only clues I left for that are the ages of John and Suki.

As soon as I read the fan fiction that Suki and Sarah wrote, I embraced it as part of the main series and I continue using their gadgetry in the Suki With A Twist books. Update: ISBN is 1451551827 and EAN-13 is 9781451551822 have just been assigned to this book.

Will start working on Suki VI, or whatever I name the next book of the main Suki series, after I get these two finished and available in paperback.

Healthcare in the Suki Series

I may have touched on this before, but it was months ago and the topic is hot again in the news.
In the future (2030s) I imagined for the Suki series I had the couple as ahead of their peers in Libertarian thought and action, but I didn’t want to be preachy about it. Several times they are described as having some sort of medical care. In Suki I they both get checkups and pay with credit or money cards. They also happen to have the same general practitioner and discover that the day before an appointment.

In Suki II: Sunshine Returns, Suki’s therapist, also and MD, actually does house calls and she gets paid the same way too, cash.

The idea behind all of this was that they have doctors who do not deal with insurance companies or the government health system. ALL of their patients pay cash and their patients get to set unique terms that are not heard of or very rare now.

Suki’s deal with her therapist, Dr. DiMarco, is that Suki gets copies of all of her notes if she likes. She orders a complete copy of her file to give to John. Their individual deals with their GP, Dr. Donna, is similar. John has a copy of his complete medical file made for Suki.

I was not thinking that this would be the 2030s norm, but more common that what we have today. Plenty of people do similar things, but I don’t see it as customer driven, or at least it is not as customer driven as I would like. So I made the future more customer driven and a backlash against a period (between now and the 2030s) of imposed health insurance, doctors being forced to accept government and private insurance and all the rest that we are being threatened with today.

When I spoke to a therapist about the transaction structure for the future it seemed like it was so alien to him that I was a little worried it might be too far out there. Too bad, my future is my future. He was mentioned doctors today tiering their feed based on patient income. Nothing wrong with that, but I was thinking more of a self-tiering market, where better doctors charge more and patients see who they can afford based on the doctor’s pricing or other agreements.  He also said that letting a patient have their notes was just not happening.  Maybe now, but in a free market there may very well be therapists who do that.

Not mentioned in the books, but it was a thought for how the medical industry would be working, many small clinics for various specific procedures, like we have today for laser eye surgery and other things. I see this as only expanding, with more cosmetic surgery procedures available on an outpatient clinic basis.

In Suki III: Never Let Us End, John is hospitalized for a week. The couple subscribes to an ambulance service and that is what they take to the private hospital I invented (Admiral Grace Hopper Memorial) where they have a private room, smoking allowed. They pay for the whole ordeal cash (plastic).

A reader today may think that the couple is fabulously wealthy, but they are not. They are very successful, but they live in a freer-market world than we live in today. Technological advances and competition keep prices at their natural levels, not the inflated ones we have today due to overregulation. I note near the end of Suki I, through the dialogue between Patricia and Suki, that back when their mother’s were young a refrigerator cost more that the entire kitchen that Suki and John have at the condo. This is due to global competition on durable goods, and most everything else.

Shotgun Note in Suki IV: Finally A Vacation

In Suki IV: Finally A Vacation, Suki buys a 14" barrel Benelli semi-automatic 12 gauge shotgun with a four-inch chamber without any more documentation than her government issued identification cards. This is all legal in the future that I am writing, no extra taxes either.
