Steinbeck may have made up ‘Travels With Charley’

Confession: I never read this work by Steinbeck.  I did read The Grapes of Wrath in high school and saw several movies based on his books.  The original Of Mice and Men was my favorite of the movies.

Steinbeck’s ‘Travels With Charley’ Gets a Fact-Checking - NYTimes.com

Steinbeck’s book-length account of his journey, “Travels With Charley: In Search of America,” published in 1962, was generally well reviewed and became a best-seller. It remains in print, regarded by some as a classic of American travel writing. Almost from the beginning, though, a few readers pointed out that many of the conversations in the book had a stagey, wooden quality, not unlike the dialogue in Steinbeck’s fiction.

Early on in the book, for example, Steinbeck has a New England farmer talking in folksy terms about Nikita S. Khrushchev’s shoe-pounding (or -brandishing, depending on whom you ask) speech at the United Nations weeks before Khrushchev actually visited the United Nations. A particularly unlikely encounter occurs at a campsite near Alice, N.D., where a Shakespearean actor, mistaking Steinbeck for a fellow thespian, greets him with a sweeping bow, saying, “I see you are of the profession,” and then proceeds to talk about John Gielgud.

Even Steinbeck’s son John said he was convinced that his father never talked to many of the people he wrote about, and added, “He just sat in his camper and wrote all that [expletive].”

The whole article is quite interesting. Something I took away from it, more like reminded about again, is how subjective readers are. Especially the so-called scholars.  From my own experience, people want fiction to be real. One fan and Facebook friend thought Suki II: Sunshine Returns (free online) was autobiographical and asked if I was an escaped heroine sex slave. Trust me, it is fiction, every word, and I did not get to help on that one as much as I did the others. In the case of Travels With Charlie, people wanted to believe it to be real because the writer said so.

Japanese Nuclear Plant Rocked by Second Blast - Systems Still Operating as Intended

Despite the premature or false reporting of exposed fuel rods and meltdowns in Japan, the reactors are still containing the nuclear fuel and radiation.  No sign of Nezulla the Rat Monster either.  There have been a couple of hydrogen explosions.

Japanese Nuclear Plant Rocked by Second Blast : Discovery News:

"Explosions have rocked two overheating reactors at the aging Fukushima plant, located 250 kilometers (160 miles) northeast of Tokyo, after the cooling systems were knocked out by Friday's 8.9-magnitude quake.

A first explosion blew apart the building surrounding the plant's number-one reactor on Saturday but the seal around the reactor itself remained intact, officials said.

On Monday, shortly after Kan said the plant was still in an 'alarming' state, a blast at its number-three reactor shook the facility, injuring 11 people and sending plumes of smoke billowing into the sky.

Chief government spokesman Yukio Edano said the plant's operator TEPCO reported the reactor was probably undamaged and there was a low possibility of a major radiation leak at the plant.

Later Monday the cooling system at the number two reactor failed, Jiji Press reported -- the sort of failure that preceded the explosions in the number one and three reactors.

Authorities have declared an exclusion zone within a 20-kilometer (12-mile) radius of the plant and evacuated 210,000 people."

Rush Limbaugh opened his show with similar news, along with commentary that the media is hoping for a nuclear disaster.

My observation is the political left, especially those in media, will make the big disaster anything that happens with the nuclear reactors and the earthquake/tsunami will fade to the background.
