Pakistanis protest against Davis' release - The Times of India:

"ISLAMABAD: Street protests erupted in Pakistan for a second day on Thursday against the release of American Raymond Davis, whose arrest after he shot dead two Pakistani men in January triggered a major diplomatic row between the two countries.

Lawyers and some political groups took to the streets against the release of Davis, who has been described as a contractor for the American CIA, BBC reported. Small protests took place in Karachi and Lahore, it said.

More details of the protests in the article. Here is what all the flap is about:

Davis, 36, shot dead two Pakistanis on a motorcycle in Lahore Jan 27 after alleging they tried to rob him. He claimed he acted in self-defence.
A third man was also killed when a speeding car tried to come to Davis' help.

The man (Davis) was sent to jail despite initial American claims that Davis was a diplomat and deserved diplomatic immunity.

The Dawn News said that Davis was released following a deal between the CIA and Pakistan's spy agency ISI.

A petition was meanwhile filed in the Lahore High Court challenging the release Wednesday after $2.3 million was reportedly paid to the kin of the two men he shot dead in January."

The US Department of State claims that "no compensation was paid," however they have not categorically denied any payment at all.

Man charged in bomb plot on Washington DC subway:

"Washington - A Pakistani-born man (Farooque Ahmed) has been arrested for a plot to bomb subway stations in and around Washington DC on Wednesday.

The Virginia man was indicted on charges that he attempted to aid what he thought were al-Qaida operatives in planning the bombings of several subway stations in the Washington area, according to a Washington Post report."

"Ahmed wanted to kill as many military personnel as possible," the complaint alleges.
Ahmed is the second would-be terrorist from Staten Island arrested this week. Abdel Hameed Shehadeh was charged Tuesday with lying to the feds about attempts to join the Taliban.

For some reason, the above quote is not used very much and "METRO riders" replaces "military personnel".
Other items from the story -  In Staten Island, he was registered as a Republican in 2002 (note: something not unheard of from radicals trying to stay below the radar) 
- His wife, Sahar Mirza, ran the Northern Virginia Meetup.Com group Hip Muslim Moms, under the banner of Moderate Muslim Moms. Some reports say she is from Birmingham, England.
- Farooque Ahmed is the son of a retired Pakistani bank executive.
- Farooque Ahmed is reported to have a LinkedIn profile that matches this one.
In predictable form, Salon asks: Did the FBI cook up a fake bomb plot?  without so much as a peek at the FBI's legal complaint.  They continue to poo-poo several of the pending cases against alleged terrorists.  At least they stop short of theorizing that the FBI placed the gun in the hand of MAJ Hasan to cook up a fake shooting spree.


I agree with others, like Joshua Pundit, that a radical wahabi imam/mosque connection is in this story somewhere waiting to be revealed.

SILVER SPRING, Md. (WUSA) - Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division, Robbery Section and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are investigating an armed bank robbery that occurred Tuesday afternoon in the Briggs Chaney area of Silver Spring.

Police said the robber was wearing a long black burqa, blue jeans, and tan boots. He entered the bank, displayed a gun, and demanded cash.

Anyone who has information about this bank robbery and/or the suspect involved is asked to call the robbery section at (240) 773-5100.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County, toll-free, at (866) 411-TIPS (8477). Crime Solvers will pay a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information provided to them that leads to an arrest and/or indictment for this felony crime."

In an exclusive interview with the Guardian, the woman whose sentence of death by stoning triggered an international outcry has accused the Iranian authorities of lying about the charges against her to pave the way to execute her in secret.

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, 43, was sentenced to death by stoning for adultery but it was commuted to hanging after an international outcry. Her initial sentence was for 'having an illicit relationship outside marriage' but Iranian officials have claimed that she was also found guilty of murdering her husband and should still face death by stoning.

In the interview, which took place through an intermediary who cannot be named for security reasons, she said: 'They're lying. They are embarrassed by the international attention on my case and they are desperately trying to distract attention and confuse the media so that they can kill me in secret.'

A very informative and moving story about recent years in Iran.

Walking down the street as a lone woman in Tehran, it didn’t take long to have a man or two following me. Sometimes they would drive by in their cars, slowing down at the curb, calling out something suggestive, but they were not too persistent when I kept my eyes glued to the ground and ignored them.

Sounds similar to Manhattan every time I have been there. Yes, they are more persistent in Manhattan.

My lover was proficient at dating the Islamic Republic way, with stealth and planning. He was expert at using the time available, living in the moment. He, who for years I had suspected to be innocent, turned out to be an accomplished hunter. Trysts he knew how to handle, relationships he had less experience with. Most girls were willing to sleep with you, he said, but they also all immediately talked of marriage, mostly because there was no other viable option for seeing someone long term, and the rules of society, which valued a woman’s respectability above all else, demanded it. In small towns like his, where everyone knows everyone, it was hard to conduct an illicit relationship for long without attracting some attention, and anyway, as he once explained to me, the subterfuge went so deep that it even involved lying to the self, making it impossible to continue an affair for too long. He said to me once: “Haven’t you worked it out yet? This is Iran. Everyone here is acting in a film. Everything is changing, particularly for women who are no longer fitting their traditional roles but society hasn’t caught up, so they just do what they want and pretend they are doing something else all the while to make it palatable. They even lie to themselves. No one can deal with the grim reality, and they prefer the film anyway. There are seventy million people in this country, and they are all giving Oscar winning performances.”

The closest to that I have experienced is working places that had strict fraternization policies.

Read the whole thing. It is tragic and pretty and ends with a sad whimper.
