Advice Goddess: Kids Being Groomed For A Surveillance State

Creepy catch by Amy,
Advice Goddess Blog:
"Very troubling news from PogoWasRight on the creep of the surveillance state. In the latest blithe attempt to eliminate kids' expectation of privacy, aConnecticut school district wanted to require students to carry an RFID card-chipped ID so their location could be tracked:"

Cleveland: Smart Trash Carts Tell If You Haven't Been Recycling

Nice to see the opening comments begin with what a waste of money most state sponsored recycling efforts are, without drawing a karma kill.

Slashdot | Smart Trash Carts Tell If You Haven't Been Recycling:

Starting next year Cleveland residents face paying a $100 fine if they don't recycle, and the city's new high-tech trash cans will keep track if they don't. The new cans are embedded with radio frequency identification chips and bar codes which keep track of how often residents take them to the curb. If the chip shows you haven't brought your recycle can out in a while, a lucky trash supervisor will go through your can looking for recyclables. From the article: 'Trash carts containing more than 10 percent recyclable material could lead to a $100 fine, according to Waste Collection Commissioner Ronnie Owens. Recyclables include glass, metal cans, plastic bottles, paper and cardboard.'
Reason covers Cleveland frequently.  Not sure if they found a Green Police SWAT team like I did ;)

Slashdot | Germany To Roll Out ID Cards With Embedded RFID

Slashdot | Germany To Roll Out ID Cards With Embedded RFID:
'The production of RFID chips, an integral element of the new generation of German identity cards, has started after the government gave a 10-year contract to the chipmaker NXP in the Netherlands. Citizens will receive the mandatory new ID cards starting from the first of November. The new card allows German authorities to identify people with speed and accuracy, the government said. These authorities include the police, customs and tax authorities and of course the local registration and passport granting authorities. There are some concerns that the use of RFID chips will pose a security or privacy risk, however. Early versions of the electronic passports, using RFID chips with a protocol called 'basic access control' (BAC), were successfully hacked by university researchers and security experts.'
This touches on much of the future tech from both Suki series. With all of the networked computing gear people carry around normally, in the 2030's, commercial tracking and targeting of ads is simple and accurate.

Government use of individual tracking is limited, some through laws, mostly through fruits of most monitoring not being allowed in criminal cases.
