The Memorial Bridge Is Not Your Personal Pickup Zone

Some joker, with Virginia license plate XHW-6575, decided to park on the Arlington Memorial Bridge to pick up a female companion. I did not start recording as soon as he stopped because I thought he was having car trouble. Started recording as soon as I figured out he was using the bridge as a passenger pickup point.  Not sure if either of them are associated with the 10.2 'march'.

Pictures from the 10.2 'March' in Washington, DC

One detail about this march, they did not march. It looked suspiciously like a rally to me. I was never a community organizer, so who am I to judge?

From the website of one of the organizing groups:

What is the One Nation March?

On Saturday, October 2, 2010, hundreds of thousands of people from across America will gather at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. to demonstrate our re-commitment to change. The One Nation March will feature human and civil rights leaders, labor leaders, environmental and peace activists, faith leaders, celebrities and sports figures – all marching together to help Put America Back to Work and to Pull America Back Together. And to help reorder our national priorities so that investments in people come first.

More info at that site. It really did not look like "hundreds of thousands" to me.  The crowd was very nice. Much nicer than past rallies for events hosted by the Left.

I only stayed in the area for about one hour and recorded most of my wanderings on video. "Editing" that now, meaning posting it to my YouTube account in the proper size files with titles and other nice goodies.

Some of the signs and shirts from the rally march:
Shot from the top of the Washington Monument "hill".
Shot from the same location as I took a crowd shot during the Beck rally. See that post to compare.
"Kissing GOP Ass Gets You Tea-Bagged" and "Strong Middle Class Strong America"
"Kissing GOP Ass Gets You Tea-Bagged" and "Liberty & Justice For All Real Change"
"Hey Obama We're Tired of Bush-Lite! Single Payer Health Care - No War!"
"The Trickle Down Theory Is Nothing But A Golden Shower" and "Kissing GOP Ass Gets You Tea-Bagged"
"We March For Hope Not Hate"
"CWA 1180 Save Our City Support Public Health Tax The Wall St. Rich"
Trash left on the Arlington Memorial Bridge. See video for more at the 'march.'

10-2 'March' All The Video

Posting all of the video I shot of the 10.2.10 'march' (that looked a lot more like a rally to me), in order, in one post.  YouTube limitations required me to split longer videos into clips of 15 min. or less.  If you watch each clip in order you will see everything I shot, nothing was edited out.  There are two major gaps. I stopped recording briefly near the Washington Monument and near the WWII memorial.  The latter due to my accidentally shutting off the camera.  The magic of Blogspot allows me to date this on 10.2.2010, even thought I am actually posting on 10.4.2010. May edit the notes that go with each some more, so bear with me.

Walking down Washington Monument hill toward the World War II memorial, panning to show how thin the crowd is.

Clip begins just past World War II memorial, leaving trail to show big empty fields on the way back to Lincoln Memorial.

Walking through empty areas that were set-up for crowds. Note the crowd fences. Also note while passing through a fence opening that Leftists cannot keep right. Lots of trash was left from small lunch gatherings even though plenty of trash cans were around.

I re-enter the walkway and the gathering, throw away my Socialist Worker newspaper and LaRouche flier, and then make my way back up to the Lincoln Memorial grounds. Video of the trash left laying on the steps of the memorial grounds. A "grim reaper" with a "Green Jobs" sign, and wearing an Arafat style tea towel, is seen just before I make it to the steps.
Via Reason.Com, Beck vs. the Communists

Feel free to compare my video to this work by Crooks and Liars. I found their comment on the DemocraticUnderground.Com site, with a bad link (I am giving you the working link). Even in the C&L link they accidentally show a big gap in people near the reflecting pool while trying to stay with the most deceptive angle possible.
Dave N., reporting live: Amazing. The crowd size was clearly larger than the one at Beckapalooza, and the energy was outstanding. You can see the video I shot above.

Also amazing: The kind of camera work I saw from C-SPAN. It looked to me as if they were deliberately shooting the few empty seats that were close to the podium. These empty spaces were largely the result of the way the crowd was fenced at the Mall. But as you can see, it was a massive event.
Pretty good comedy there, check it out. My videos show what was behind those little clumps of people obscuring the big empty spots.

Emanuel gets dead fish as going-away present

Emanuel gets dead fish as going-away present:
"On what is reportedly Rahm Emanuel's last day as White House chief of staff, the Council of Economic Advisers presented him with their going-away gift.

'This is a dead fish!' Emanuel said, according to ABC's Jake Tapper. Austan Goolsbee, President Obama's recently installed Office of Management and Budget chief, presented Emanuel with the gift saying, 'I talked to the policy team and we wanted to give you a going-away present -- something to show how we feel about you but also shows we understand your new possibilities. I was the natural go between -- I voted for you all three times you ran for Congress and even in that first primary. So here is your present.'

The dead fish is a wink and a nod to Emanuel's intimidating management style. As The Post's Howard Kurtz put it in his analysis of the media's response to Rahm's rumored departure, 'With Rahm ensconced at Obama's side, no one wanted to cross him, at least in the press. They might get a dead fish in the mail or something.'"
I just heard Sean Hannity caught grief over the saying Rahm 'Dead Fish' Emanuel.  Just for reason readers, I present you Lobster Girl:

Suki's Afternoon Links: At least they got the Tuskegee Study right, not that anybody else will

The American Apology Tour Continues: U.S. apologizes for syphilis experiment in Guatemala | Reuters:
"(Reuters) - The United States apologized on Friday for an experiment conducted in the 1940s in which U.S. government medical researchers deliberately infected Guatemalan prison inmates with syphilis.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and other top officials issued a statement about the experiment, which echoed the infamous 1960s Tuskegee study in which black American men were deliberately left untreated for syphilis."
At least they are not claiming that the Tuskegee victims were intentionally infected. Amazingly, the many references I used to see for that lie have gone into the Google memory hole.

Reason is covering this story too and it is pretty shaky.

Blackberry Encryption Hacked - Slashdot
"InfoWorld blogger Martin Heller reveals that a Russian passcode-breaker developer has broken the encryption used in BlackBerry backups. That can help recover data when passwords are lost, but also gives data thieves access to a treasure trove of corporate secrets. And the developer boasts that it was easier to crack the BlackBerry encryption than it was to crack Apple's iOS."

Maybe this is the solution that Saudi Arabia is looking for?

New York City Spending over $27 Million to Make Street Signs Proper

250,000 street signs in New York City feature street names in capital letters only, which is not the national standard. Having no other issues on the table, The New York City Department of Transportation has decided to fix the problem andput up proper signs featuring both capital and lower-case letters at a cost of $27.5 million. The Transportation Department hopes to have the job completed by 2018 with 11,000 of the most important improperly capitaled signs fixed by the end of the year. Catastrophe averted.
Americans tread water in gulf between rich, poor

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – A Wall Street adviser leaves early for work to avoid panhandlers at his suburban train station. In coal country, a suddenly homeless man watches from a bench as wealthy women shop for dresses. A down-and-out waitress sits glumly on her stoop across the street from a gleaming suburb. A freshly elected politician loses his day job.
They're the faces of a census report released this week showing that the gap between the richest and poorest Americans is wider than ever.
After Jimmy Carter got rid of all the poor people, then Ronald Reagan brought them back, then Bill Clinton got rid of them again, Obama is having trouble ending the poverty caused by Bush. Or something like that.

Osama Bin Laden Liberaltarian tape on relief work: 'Stop fighting me with armies and spend your money elsewhere'

BBC News - 'Osama Bin Laden' tape on relief work:
"In the 11-minute undated tape, Bin Laden expresses concern over natural disasters and calls for more aid for victims, said intelligence group Site.

The tape shows a still image of Bin Laden and scenes of people in disaster zones receiving aid.

The tape would be Bin Laden's first public comments since March, but its authenticity has not been confirmed.

In it, the voice says more people are affected by climate change than wars and appears to refer to recent flooding in Pakistan.

'The catastrophe (in Pakistan) is very big and it is difficult to describe it,' he says.

'What we are facing... calls for generous souls and brave men to take serious and prompt action to provide relief for their Muslim brothers in Pakistan.'"
Translation: Stop fighting my people with your military and spend your money on something else.

Come on Gloria Allred, this is no smoking gun

"This letter does not imply that you or your employee intentionally provided incorrect information about the employees name or SSN. It is not a basis, in and of itself, for you to take adverse action against the employee, such as laying off, suspending, firing, or discriminating against the individual. Any employer that used the information in this letter to justify taking adverse action against an employee may violate state or federal law and be subject to legal consequences. Moreover, this letter makes no statement about your employees immigration status."
Gloria Allred likes to waive papers around.
The words above are on page one of the document Gloria Allred was waiving around as "proof" that Meg Whitman knew she had an illegal alien (undocumented worker, Ms. Allred's phrasing) working for her.  From the timing below, it looks like the LA Times listens to the Mark Levin show and made their update accordingly.

This was the story all day and much of the evening:
Allred promises more documents in Whitman case| PolitiCal | Los Angeles Times:
"Attorney Gloria Allred said GOP gubernatorial nominee Meg Whitman is lying when she says she didn’t knowingly employ an undocumented housekeeper and pledged to provide documentation at noon Thursday that would show that the federal government contacted the Whitman family about the matter in 2003.

“Our evidence will show she is lying,” Allred said on “Good Morning America” on Thursday morning."
The LA Times started backtracking and updated their story when they finally looked at the "evidence". From the timing, they probably heard it from Mark Levin.

Whitman's husband says 'it is possible' handwriting on letter is his [Updated]

Meg Whitman, wife of Griff Harsh
Dr. Griff Harsh, Meg Whitman’s husband, just released a statement saying that it may be his handwriting on a 2003 letter that raised the possibility that their housekeeper was undocumented.
[Updated at 3:55 p.m.: An earlier version of this item said the letter contained a signature that might be Harsh's. The letter has handwriting on it, but not a signature.]
The statement:
“While I honestly do not recall receiving this letter, as it was sent to me seven years ago, I can say it is possible that I would've scratched a follow up note on a letter like this, which is a request for information to make certain Nicky received her Social Security benefits and W-2 tax refund for withheld wages. Since we believed her to be legal, I would have had no reason to suspect that she would not have filled it in and done what was needed to secure her benefits.
“It is important to note what this letter actually says: 'this letter makes no statement about your employee's immigration status.'
“The essential fact remains the same, neither Meg nor I believed there was a problem with Nicky's legal status and I certainly don't recall ever discussing it with my wife, nor did I ever show her any letter about it. The facts of this matter are very clear: Ms. Diaz broke the law and lied to us and to the employment agency. When she confessed her deception to us last year, we ended her employment immediately. Meg and I played by the rules and followed the law. Ms. Diaz did not. If, as she claims, she received this letter and note of inquiry from me, she never answered my request to look into this. Instead, she choose to continue her deception. This entire matter is a sad one and it's timing is clearly the result of a calculated and cynical political smear by Meg's opponents."
-- Seema Mehta in Santa Monica
Gloria Allred was interviewed on the Mark Levin Show tonight during his first hour. Listen here. Mark pointed out this blurb on page one of the letter that I will quote again:
"This letter does not imply that you or your employee intentionally provided incorrect information about the employees name or SSN. It is not a basis, in and of itself, for you to take adverse action against the employee, such as laying off, suspending, firing, or discriminating against the individual. Any employer that used the information in this letter to justify taking adverse action against an employee may violate state or federal law and be subject to legal consequences. Moreover, this letter makes no statement about your employees immigration status."
How much farther away from "proof" can you get? Those few lines are the opposite of that Allred claims.  To make matters worse, as Levin pointed out, Allred has put her client in jeopardy by exposing her crime of falsifying answers and possibly using a forged Social Security card to secure her employment status in the USA.

Does Rahm Emanuel Meet Residency Requirement for Chicago Mayor's Race?

A discussion on the Roe Conn show, about Chicago residency requirements for running for office, this hour is quite interesting.

The basics:
You must be reside in Chicago for twelve months before the election. The requirement is different than for voting in Chicago, Illinois. Voters need only be registered to vote there and have an address there, even if they are away from the city, like in Washington, DC. However, there is a law (specific citation not given) that has been on the books since the 1800s requiring mayoral candidates to actually live in Chicago for 12 months before the election. There was some discussion of the terminology in the law.

Chicago: "Granny Oakley" Defends Her Home With Gun

Fed-up woman realized cavalry wasn't coming :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Mary Mitchell:
"When people get fed up, they stop waiting for help to come. On Tuesday, one South Side senior had had enough. When two boys who allegedly broke her windows were brazen enough to come back and curse her out, Margaret Matthews shot one of them in the arm.

According to the woman's neighbor, Hilda Brunt, the boys, ages 12 and 13, had been tormenting the senior for a while."

"They burned her grill up last year. They would curse her out. I told her last week we need to go and talk to his parents," Brunt told reporters.
The boys have been charged as juveniles with aggravated assault of a person over 60.

Iron Man 2: Spoiler at the end.

Other than this exchange: "M-One-Thirty-Four. Seven Sixty Two?"
What? No, military consultant intern for the movie, that should be "Seven POINT Six Two" thankyouverymuch. It was an otherwise fun movie.

My review of Iron Man 2:
Lots of AC/DC classics in the soundtrack.

Tony Stark, defense contractor and other things, built a cool suit.
The US federal government decides to steal it and give it to Stark's competitor, Hammer.
In the meantime, Stark is being poisoned by the reactor in his chest that is supposed to be keeping him alive. From the first movie, I had the impression that the reactor in his chest was keeping shrapnel away from vital arteries. Couldn't some invasive surgery cure that?
Tony's secretary and personal assistant, Pepper Potts, gets to be CEO of Stark Enterprises too and she is the hottest chick in the series.
Tony invents some more stuff, including an element to replace the palladium reactor core in his chest.
After the government steals the Iron Man suit and gives it to Hammer to modify, Mickey Roark's character turns it into a drone. Then the drones fight Iron Man.
Spoiler alert:
Iron Man wins.

Terror Attacks Against USA and West Imminent - Video

Hat tip to the Chris Plante show (follow him on Twitter). I was hearing bits about the new terror threats in the news and Chris is tying it all together today.

In the US, ABC News (h/t to GaltsGirl) seems to have the most comprehensive information on the German captured in his way to Europe and held in Afghanistan:

"A senior US official said that while there is a "credible" threat, no specific time or place is known. President Obama has been briefed about the threat, say senior US officials.
Intelligence and law enforcement authorities in the US and Europe said the threat information is based on the interrogation of a suspected German terrorist allegedly captured on his way to Europe in late summer and now being held at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan.
US law enforcement officials say they have been told the terrorists were planning a series of "Mumbai-style" commando raids on what were termed "economic or soft" targets in the countries. Pakistani militants killed 173 people with guns and grenades during the 2008 attacks in Mumbai, India."
Farther into the article:
"The new threat to France, and to Germany and Britain and the U.S., is coming from Pakistan, according to intelligence officials. The captured German reportedly said several teams of attackers, all with European passports, had been trained and dispatched from training camps in Waziristan and Pakistan. Officials say the German claimed the attack plan had been approved by Osama Bin Laden.
US intelligence officials said they believed an attack on American soil was more likely to come from terrorists connected to the al Qaeda group in Yemen, known as AQAP, al Qaeda of the Arabian Peninsula."
A photo from the article shows a Jihadi wearing the latest US Army camouflage.
"In the last four years, dozens of German citizens have been recruited to train in al Qaeda-connected camps in Pakistan, according to US and German law enforcement officials. German language jihadi videos on the internet help to attract more trainees.
"Some are German converts, many are Turks, many are Arabs," said Guido Steinberg, a counter-terrorism analyst at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs. "Right now we already have the first Afghans and even Iranians in these circles. It's a very mixed bunch of people -- quite international."
"The American authorities are extremely nervous about what is going on, the Germans are extremely nervous about what's going on," said Steinberg.
"The advantage, of course, is the passport," said Steinberg, "because with the German passport it's a lot easier to travel.""
Fair use does not do justice to the ABC coverage. Stop by their site and read the whole thing.
Meanwhile in Georgia, USA tractor trailers were being stopped and inspected at an elevated rate:
(h/t Chris Plante and wizbang)

Counter-Terror Operation Stops Trucks On I-20

A team of federal agents stopped tractor-trailers on Interstate 20 just west of Atlanta, inspecting each truck as it passed through a weigh station, and Channel 2 has learned its part of a counter-terrorism operation.
Channel 2's Linda Stouffer reported a flashing sign on the interstate directed the trucks to pull into a state-owned inspection station near Lee Road in Douglas County at the height of the evening commute.Channel 2 Action News confirmed that agents from several federal agencies, including Homeland Security, the Department of Transportation, and the Transportation Security Administration were involved. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the exercise."
Someone called into the Chris Plante show (did not get on the air) and reported that certain classes of trucks used in landscaping ind delivery were being stopped at an increased rate inside the Washington, DC beltway.

Perhaps unrelated, this blog was receiving odd traffic from Atlanta and Albuquerque in early September. It resumed this week from Ashburn, Virginia.

Opry House Ready For Music Again - Nashville News Story - Video at the Link

Opry House Ready For Music Again - Nashville News Story - WSMV Nashville (more here):
"After five months of painstaking restoration, music is set to return Tuesday night to the Grand Ole Opry House.

Country music star Trace Adkins said he remembers the images on television of the Opry House under water during the May floods.

'Did I suffer personally in the floods? Yes, when I saw the Opry House under water, it hurt me in my soul,' said Adkins.

Five months later, after a painstaking restoration project, country music artists will perform once again on the Opry House's hallowed stage.

'A negative can always be turned into a positive in some way. This is a shinning example of that,' said Adkins.

Tuesday night's grand reopening concert takes place just short of the five-month anniversary of the flooding that severely damaged the iconic building."

Obama visit felt like a New Mexico campaign stop | obama, albuquerque, stop - News - Clovis News Journal

Obama visit felt like a New Mexico campaign stop | obama, albuquerque, stop - News - Clovis News Journal:
"ALBUQUERQUE — The White House billed it as a backyard visit in Albuquerque’s south valley, a chance for a disabled Marine Corps veteran, his family and their neighbors to pull up a lawn chair and share concerns with President Barack Obama.

But it sure sounded like a campaign stop to prop up New Mexico Democrats.

Obama addressed about 40 people at the stucco-sided home of Andy and Etta Cavalier, speaking on the importance of education in ensuring America’s economic future before taking questions from the group on matters ranging from immigration reform and veterans issues to why he is a Christian.

In the audience were Gov. Bill Richardson, Lt. Gov. Diane Denish and Rep. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., who suggested to Obama that he visit the semi-rural south valley, where a breeze smelled of alfalfa from an adjacent pasture and two horses grazed while the president spoke.

“When you get in the airport and see downtown, that’s all great, but I wanted him to see a piece of New Mexico that’s not going to look like the places he sees in Ohio and Virginia,” Heinrich said afterward. “We’re very proud of that. It’s not like Anywhere, USA.”"
No word if the Maobama put the Predator Drones on hold while he visited USA Islamic Terrorism Central, or if he was ready to duck.

Sounds like he skipped the tour of "Poncho Villa State Park," but the surprisingly good thing is he did not announce federal funding for a Che Guevara National Park.

New York Times Dicks Up Chicago Travel Piece

New York Times does an impersonation of an article. More like an illusion.
New York Times Flubs Chicago Travel Piece:
"FOX Chicago News:

Chicago - The New York Times made some mistakes about the Windy City in a travel piece called 36 Hours in Chicago in the weekend paper.

The first error called the Magnificent Mile the Miracle Mile.

The article also miscalculated how far Hyde Park and Logan Square are from the loop.

It also got the academic calendar of the University of Chicago wrong."

Tenant in Rahm Emanuel Chicago home rebuffs Emanuel plea to leave. Update - Lynn Sweet

Tenant in Rahm Emanuel Chicago home rebuffs Emanuel plea to leave. Update - Lynn Sweet:
"WASHINGTON---White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel--expected to step down this week to launch a run for mayor of Chicago--tried and failed to persuade his tenant in his Chicago home to move out so Emanuel could move back in, reports my Sun-Times colleague Michael Sneed.

Here's my update, from a souce (sic) close to Emanuel: 'It's clearly an inconvenience for Rahm and for the current tenants--but it is what it is. That said, as this news has spread in Chicago, Rahm has received some really great offers on places to stay.'

Emanuel rented his North Side Chicago home from Sept. 1, 2009 to Sept. 1, 2010--and signed an extension until June, 2011 just six days before Daley announced on Sept. 7 that he would not seek another term.

Reports Sneed: The tenant, Robert Halpin,' who described himself as an industrial real estate developer in the midst of heading to Louisville on business Monday, told Sneed: 'Look, according to the lease I am not allowed to speak to the media about the house.

'But I can tell you I have no plans to move.'"
The city requirement seems to be fulfilled with regard to the residency requirement. He owns a home in the city, had voted absentee and has maintend status as a resident working out-of-town.

Wikipedia co-founder slams Wikileaks

AFP: Wikipedia co-founder slams Wikileaks:
"KUALA LUMPUR — The co-founder of online encyclopedia Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales, on Tuesday slammed whistleblower WikiLeaks over its release of Afghan war documents which he said could 'get people killed'.
Wales also expressed irritation over the website's use of the term 'Wiki' in its name, which refers to a site that allows different users to collaborate and make contributions.
'I would distance myself from WikiLeaks, I wish they wouldn't use the name, they are not a Wiki. A big way they got famous in the first place was by using the word Wiki, which was unfortunate in my view,' he said at a business conference in Kuala Lumpur."
AFP also quoted Wales to say:

"In the most recent round of leaks, the New York Times for example... actually redacted certain information that could put people in harm's way whereas Wikileaks is planning to publish absolutely everything," he said.
"I think it is really important when we have sensitive information, that we do rely on responsible journalists to sort through it for us... it's much better than dumping all kinds of crazy information online and get people killed," he added."

In another quote, I am not as generous as Wales. I do not know Julian Assange, but his actions do not look like the actions of anybody who cares about anybody but himself and his pet causes.

"It isn't proof of anything but could be enough to get someone killed," he said.
"I don't think Julian Assange wants those people killed, however if he irresponsibly follows the policy of releasing absolutely everything, it's incredibly dangerous for those people," he said, referring to WikiLeaks' spokesman."
