CHICAGO—With the airline industry continuing to suffer under the ongoing recession, the Boeing Company was forced Monday to lay off Al Freedman, the only guy left at the corporation who knows how to keep wings from falling off planes. 'We used to have a whole team of engineers who knew how to make the wings stay on, but those days are long gone,' Boeing CEO James McNerney, Jr. said. 'We'll make it work, though. The wings are not necessarily the most important part of the plane, anyway.' McNerney added that at least they were able to save the job of the guy who knows how to prevent jet engines from exploding.

In an exclusive interview with the Guardian, the woman whose sentence of death by stoning triggered an international outcry has accused the Iranian authorities of lying about the charges against her to pave the way to execute her in secret.

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, 43, was sentenced to death by stoning for adultery but it was commuted to hanging after an international outcry. Her initial sentence was for 'having an illicit relationship outside marriage' but Iranian officials have claimed that she was also found guilty of murdering her husband and should still face death by stoning.

In the interview, which took place through an intermediary who cannot be named for security reasons, she said: 'They're lying. They are embarrassed by the international attention on my case and they are desperately trying to distract attention and confuse the media so that they can kill me in secret.'

The deal could have wide-ranging implications, given how many other countries have expressed similar concerns, or in the case of the United Arab Emirates, have threatened to block Blackberry email and messaging services.'

Perhaps the governments of UAE and India would be satisfied, too, if only they had access to the messages transmitted."

From the above linked article (from April): 'Wikileaks is benefiting form Sweden's basic law 'Grundlag' on the freedom of print information, because it also guarantees the anonymity of sources in digital media, say sources at the European Parliament. In Sweden, if a website registers with the public authorities and can prove it has an editor-in-chief, then it can also be protected under the law, argues the parliamentary source.' Says the anonymous submtter, 'However, it seems Wikileaks never registered with the public authorities (article in Swedish; here it is auto-translated to English), and thus is not protected by the freedom of print information basic law even if they do have an editor-in-chief.'

Back before I started working at Reason, when I was in graduate school and broker than Amtrak, my soon-to-be wife (and, alas, now ex) and I splurged for about 10 weeks of pre- and post-wedding travel, here and abroad. We financed the fun via credit cards and it took us, all told, five or more years to pay off the goddamned balance. (And don't even get me started on the cost of our wedding, which we paid for too.) The thought of not paying it off never crossed our minds, even though we literally had no disposable income once the trip ended. We kept switching the balance to new cards that offered free or low-interest transfers and carried the debt until we both started working full-time and threw that particular monkey off our backs.

What is up with people on Facebook who claim to be Nigerian? This is growing me weary.

Within the past few years months I have been asked by a woman if I would adopt her so she could be a nurse in the USA. She was already a nurse in Nigeria.  A Nigerian man kept telling me he was my brother and wanted an invitation to my wedding. He admitted that he could get a visa to the USA if he had a wedding invitation from his "sister"!  Now, let me share this long nonsense with you. Remember, I was dealing with this and all you have to do is read it (if you like), LOL! At least he did not insist on coming to the USA for a visit to test me out first.
