Update to Baltimore recruiting center bombing plot

Update to yesterday's story.

In plan to attack recruiting center, echoes of Christmas tree bombing plot - CSMonitor.com:

"Antonio Martinez, 21, of Baltimore appeared in federal court on Wednesday and was charged with attempting to explode a car bomb at a military recruiting station in Catonsville, Md.

There was no real bomb. It was all a setup arranged by undercover FBI sources and operatives posing as militant Muslims."

Yesterday, a CBS affiliate reported Martinez went by Mohamed O. Mohamud and Mohamed Hussain (I still prefer Mohamed O'Mohamud).   More from CSM:

The operation nearly fell apart because of similarities to the Nov. 26 case in Portland. After seeing news accounts of the sting operation and arrest, Martinez phoned the same unnamed confidential source and expressed concern about an undercover FBI agent who was posing as an Afghan militant.

Martinez told the source that he needed to know “who this brother is. … I’m not falling for no B.S.,” according to the affidavit.

And -

“Every person Mr. Martinez asked to join in his scheme either declined to participate, tried to talk him out of it, or reported him to the FBI,” US Attorney Rod Rosenstein said in a statement. “There is no evidence that Mr. Martinez received direction or support from any other person.”

 CBS Evening News reports:

According to an affidavit the government was tipped to Martinez back in October, recording numerous conversations he allegedly had with an informant as well as an undercover agent over two months. In one conversation, Martinez said, "[W]e blow one recruiting center up, then we hit another one, there's no more recruiting centers in Maryland." 

As evidence the government also cites Facebook postings including, "[T]he sword is cummin (sic) the reign of oppression is about 2 cease..."

Man charged in bomb plot on Washington DC subway:

"Washington - A Pakistani-born man (Farooque Ahmed) has been arrested for a plot to bomb subway stations in and around Washington DC on Wednesday.

The Virginia man was indicted on charges that he attempted to aid what he thought were al-Qaida operatives in planning the bombings of several subway stations in the Washington area, according to a Washington Post report."

"Ahmed wanted to kill as many military personnel as possible," the complaint alleges.
Ahmed is the second would-be terrorist from Staten Island arrested this week. Abdel Hameed Shehadeh was charged Tuesday with lying to the feds about attempts to join the Taliban.

For some reason, the above quote is not used very much and "METRO riders" replaces "military personnel".
Other items from the story -  In Staten Island, he was registered as a Republican in 2002 (note: something not unheard of from radicals trying to stay below the radar) 
- His wife, Sahar Mirza, ran the Northern Virginia Meetup.Com group Hip Muslim Moms, under the banner of Moderate Muslim Moms. Some reports say she is from Birmingham, England.
- Farooque Ahmed is the son of a retired Pakistani bank executive.
- Farooque Ahmed is reported to have a LinkedIn profile that matches this one.
In predictable form, Salon asks: Did the FBI cook up a fake bomb plot?  without so much as a peek at the FBI's legal complaint.  They continue to poo-poo several of the pending cases against alleged terrorists.  At least they stop short of theorizing that the FBI placed the gun in the hand of MAJ Hasan to cook up a fake shooting spree.


I agree with others, like Joshua Pundit, that a radical wahabi imam/mosque connection is in this story somewhere waiting to be revealed.

The Wassef and Sami Samir Hassoun Connection: Real or Accident?

First, an excerpt of Chicago Tribune coverage of "Wrigleyville Bomber" Sami Hassoun's most recent court appearance:

Hassoun's attorney, Myron Auerbach, argued that Hassoun should be released from custody, confined at home with electronic monitors and supervised by his family.

Auerbach suggested that his 22-year-old client was influenced in his actions by a government informant planted as a friend and undercover FBI agents who posed as his terrorist co-conspirators.

"(The case) shows a troubled young man who was scattered in his thoughts," the lawyer said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joel Hammerman said Hassoun showed no hesitation when the undercover agents gave him a backpack with what he thought was a bomb. He was arrested moments after dropping it in a trash receptacle by a sports bar in the 3500 block of North Clark Street shortly after midnight Saturday. Authorities said Hassoun favored the crowded location to maximize casualties. The Dave Matthews Band had played at Wrigley Field earlier that night.

"What the defendant did was take what he thought was a ticking time bomb and put it in a crowded area," Hammerman said. "He looked for an area that would offer maximum damage to life and property."

The article goes on to say that Sami Samir Hassoun was born in Lebanon and raised on the Ivory Coast, then moved back to Lebanon before moving to the United States. He s reported to hold US Resident Alien status.

An internet search revealed a 2004 article with a telephone interview quote from one Sami Hassoun, who was living in Beirut, Lebanon at the time, urging that his brother USMC Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun (واصف علي حسون‎) be released by his captors in Iraq. Eventually it was discovered that Corporal Hassoun faked his own abduction, then fled the US to Lebanon to avoid courts martial proceedings.

"He's just a soldier doing his job like any other person," Sami Hassoun said in a telephone interview from his home in Beirut, Lebanon.

The brother of a U.S. Marine missing in Iraq said Tuesday that a blindfolded man shown in a video with a curved sword above his head is his brother and pleaded for captors to "just release him."


"Please leave him, for the sake of God, for the sake of his mom and dad."

Unfortunately, I do not have any Lebanese acquaintances these days, but my Arabic translator is Moroccan and another friend is Iranian. Both told me the chances of the Sami Hassoun quoted above and the one arrested in Chicago being different people are remote (they stated it stronger). I am still reserving judgment until a more concrete confirmation is provided.

Sami Samir Hassoun's Facebook page is still active as of this posting and an active discussion is taking place on his "wall".

Lebanese Man Arrested for Bomb Plot in Chicago

Update 21 September 2010: Ray Hanania of New American Media reports -  

"FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Grant and U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said Hassoun told the FBI informant he was upset with Mayor Daley and Chicago politics. He said he felt the city did not have enough security and he wanted to teach Daley a lesson.

Daley, who is on a business mission to China, and the city have come under criticism in recent months by activists angry over Chicago’s relationship with Israel."

My 2¢, announcing that you want to set bombs in US cities in the name of Islam may be wearing thin, or too much bad press. Saying you want to disrupt commerce and effect political change has an even better ring with the radical US Leftwing.

Chicago Tribune Headline - FBI: Man arrested in Wrigleyville bomb plot

22 year old Sami Samir Hassoun, of the 4700 block of North Kedzie Avenue (also known as "Little Arabia") was arrested early Sunday morning after Hasson placed a backpack, that he thought was full of explosives near the corner of Eddy and Clark Street, in a curbside trash can on the 3500 block of Clark near Sluggers Sports Bar.  Patrons of a Dave Matthews band concert were leaving Wrigley Field around the same time.

The story attributes the FBI as saying the public was never in danger and that Hassoun had a history of voicing violent plots against the United States.

An internet search shows a Sami Hassoun, of Beiruit, Lebanon, was interviewed by phone in 2004 about his brother, Cpl. Wassef Hassoun a US Marine Interpreter in the 1st US Marine Expeditionary Force, who was allegedly captured near Falluja and held hostage. Cpl. Hassoun was later charged with desertion and disappeared in 2005 before trial. Cpl. Hassoun moved to the US in 2000 with his family and joined the US Marine Corps in 2002. There is no confirmed relation between the two men.

One of Sami Samir Hassoun's alleged plots was to poison the water supply of Chicago, a recurring plot that goes back to the Vietnam War protest era, or earlier.

According to the FBI complaint, Sami Samir Hassoun's motivation was to affect change in the political environment of Chicago, disgruntled with the mayor, and a financial motive to personally profit from planned terrorist acts. He has entered a plea of not guilty.

Truther Connections: Don't Believe The Government Edition

My poor little brain and all this conspiracy stuff. I just had the thought of donating a gas torch to Rosie O'Donnell.

Woke just a little while ago and turned on Coast to Coast, a show I haven't listened to for weeks, or at least since the last time I woke up five hours before normal. The first topic: Conspiracy theories. At least this time it is not me bringing up the subject. The guest is interesting, one of the After Disclosure creators.

I think a comment on a Facebook Friend's wall recently was "racism is your get out of logic free card" and that is certainly true whenever some overly emotional person is on a cable news discussion panel. From my recent experience I can add another "the government is your get out of logic free card" and it is true on the internet.

After a week of nearly identical comments from 9/11 Inside Job Truthers fleeing my circle of Facebook Friends and a couple of decades living online, I can honestly say that when someone tells me "you can't believe what the government tells you" then I know they believe any crazy thing any non-government person will feed them. The logic goes like this: the government said we landed people on the moon, someone else says we did not, the government lied, QED.

Allow me to back up a few steps. I am not one to believe what anybody tells me at face value, including people who work for the government. When President Obama gets on the air and talks about how many jobs have been saved or created, I can tell by the weasel words that he is bullshitting anybody listening. When I hear "The Unabomber was a CIA Agent" I have the same reaction as I do to an Obama national address.

The second guest on Coast to Coast tonight is more to my liking. Author David Aaronovitch of Voodoo Histories is giving comforting examples of actual conspiracies vs. imagined conspiracies. I need sleep! He is not making me sleepy, this is interesting!

North Korea has apparently decided this social networking thing is worth doing. Just days after launching Twitter and YouTube accounts, it appears to have added Facebook to the list. It probably won't get too many friends in South Korea, which has already blocked access to the North Korean Twitter account for containing 'illegal information' under its security laws...and says the Facebook page could suffer the same fate.

I wonder how that Facebook Places feature is working for them?

Series tie-in: The Koreas are reunited in both series. In Suki III when one of John's nurses mentions she and her husband are going to work in the old North Korea at a new hospital.

Unfortunately, this looks like it only works with a court order and I bet it rarely works when some chick is bothering a guy. Say, for example, some nut searching a guy's blog for her full name, daily, for months.

"AUGUST 16--A Florida man was arrested last night after he allegedly violated a protective order by sending his estranged wife requests to “friend” him on Facebook.

According to a Pasco County Sheriff’s Office report, Harry Bruder, 54, admitted contacting his wife twice last last month via the social networking site. Investigators charge that Bruder’s Facebook requests violated a domestic violence injunction obtained by his wife Carole, from whom he has been separated for two years.

“Yeah, I did it,” Bruder said when confronted by cops. He remarked that the friend requests were “stupid” and knew that he should not have sent them. Bruder, who also copped to changing the password to his wife’s Yahoo e-mail account, said that he was upset that he had to attend court-ordered counseling sessions as a result of the injunction (which bars him from any contact with his wife)."

What is up with people on Facebook who claim to be Nigerian? This is growing me weary.

Within the past few years months I have been asked by a woman if I would adopt her so she could be a nurse in the USA. She was already a nurse in Nigeria.  A Nigerian man kept telling me he was my brother and wanted an invitation to my wedding. He admitted that he could get a visa to the USA if he had a wedding invitation from his "sister"!  Now, let me share this long nonsense with you. Remember, I was dealing with this and all you have to do is read it (if you like), LOL! At least he did not insist on coming to the USA for a visit to test me out first.
