Mohammed, Obama, al Qaeda, Pantybomber, terrorism, cartoon

Danish police shoot 'terrorist' trying to enter Mohammed cartoonist's home
Danish police have shot a Somali man linked to al-Qaida who tried to enter the home of an artist who drew controversial cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.
Don't bring an ax and a knife to a gun fight!

President Obama notices that al Qaeda exists and they sent the Pantybomber:

Obama blames al-Qaeda for Christmas Day jet 'bomb'

He said it appeared Yemen-based al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula had armed and trained the accused, 23-year-old Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.

Update September 14, 2010: Pantybomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab wants to defend himself and has fired his lawyer.

Interesting Slashdot Story About Personal Info

Fourth-party data brokers to bypass fourth amendment

Congress reacted to these (US Supreme Court) holdings by creating a patchwork of statutes designed to prevent the government's direct and unfettered access to documents stored with third-parties; thus, the government's access is fettered by various statutory requirements, including, in many cases, notice of the disclosure.

Blackwater Shooting Charges Dismissed by Judge

Blackwater Charges Dismissed

Citing repeated government missteps, U.S. District Judge Ricardo Urbina dismissed a case that had been steeped in international politics. The shooting in busy Nisoor Square left 17 Iraqis dead and inflamed anti-American sentiment abroad. The Iraqi government wanted the guards to face trial in Iraq and officials there said they would closely watch how the U.S. judicial system handled the case.

Good for our rights on so many levels.

Bad Fort Hood Follow-up

Somebody at Fort Hood Should Be Walking the Plank   [Andy McCarthy]
See the whole article at the title link.
Someone in the US military hired an instructor and sent him to Fort Hood, Louay Safi, an official with Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) the umbrella group for the Muslim Brotherhood.
Was with International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT)
Gave a check to the victims of Maj. Hasan, blood money.
ISNA was identified by the Justice Department at the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing conspiracy trial as an unindicted co-conspirator.  An organization that was funding Hamas.

Safi was caught on tape with a known terrorist fundraiser in 1995.

More on him herehere, and here.

Neil Stephenson's "Turn On, Tune In, Veg Out"

An interesting comment in an email pointed me to this Slashdot story, which was good but I have no strong opinion either way on it.  It did have an interesting link to a Neil Stephenson article from 2005, Turn On, Tune In, Veg Out.

It is a critique of a Star Wars movie that was just released.  His criticism was more toward the movie itself not having much "geek" in it, all veg.  Maybe a little more of a critique of the method.

Post Origional 3 SW movies all sorts of TV shows, books and other products were produced that developed a rich background for the movies to be based on.  Neal describes an early scene in one of the newer movies where the Jedi board a ship and fight a lot, then take the ship over.  The problem he notices is that noplace in the movie is it revealed who owns the ship!  I caught the theme of Socialism vs. Free Market from Neal'sdescription, but that is a different issue.

Full disclosure, I am a fan of Mr. Stephenson, Snowcrash is one of my favorite books ever.  I am not a Star Wars follower, but I have seen the first two movies.  I was unaware that the movie franchise had done what Neal describes so extensively.

Something I did with the Suki Series was put the background to the story online, but I was trying to avoid what Neal describes in his article.  In the books I think I have enough descriptions of gadgets, cars, clothes and the general environment to have complete stories.  I also began this blog and got Suki to help (she helped with everything and is too modest about it) to get into the super geeky details.  She even started her own blog for ultra geek things related to the books.

For example, I think I describe "gogs" well and I never bothered to Google the term.  It just seemed like an appropriate term for glasses with a view screen, but I didn't want to take up pages of book space for it, so the details are here and at SukiSite.com.  I wanted the story to be focused on the characters and their relationship.  Very little of it is affected by world events, in the beginning, so that stuff is here and on the website too.  When world events invade their lives that is in the books and not much mention of it here.

Anyway, go check Neal's article.  It is very good, just like everything else he writes.  I am hoping that the method I used is beneficial to the readers.  The bits of feedback I have gotten so far are mostly positive and yes, I know the SukiSite.com page is "plain and ugly," it is supposed to be that way ;)  Fast loading, clean, etc.

Backlash My Ass Again: Pantybomber Edition

Reposting this (from 11/13/09) for the Christmas Pantybomber, plus updates at the bottom.  Replace Palestinian-American terrorist details with Nigerian Pantybomber details and you have a new story!

No, that title is not something I request from beloved boyfriend.  It is my response to the political correctness that is already killing us. (Edit Dec. 16, 09, it is borrowed from a passage in John's earlier post.)

Raise your hand if you are bracing for the backlash in America against Muslims.

Those who raised your hands, stop paying so much attention to the mainstream media and your stupid liberal friends.  As Michael C. Moynihan points out in great detail at the Reason blogWe Don't Do Backlashes.  Remember all that backlash after 9/11?  Right, none save for one lone nut who murdered a Sikh, was caught and prosecuted, as Moynihan mentions.

However, the other backlash has begun.  Islamic fringe backlash against anybody who doesn't join with them in Jihad.  That is how Major Malik Nadal Hasan has earned 13 charges of premeditated murder.  And then there is this latest event (via Christopher Logan): Backlash in California: Muslim at mall kiosk tears crucifix from shopper's neck, shouts "Allah is power".  There is some good old tolerance for you.
Police arrested 22-year-old Abdul Walid Hamid of Hayward on the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 4, after he reportedly tore a crucifix from a person's neck and scared others at Stoneridge Shopping Center.
Hamid, an employee at a mall kiosk near Starbucks, has been charged with battery, terrorist threats and grand theft.
According to reports, Hamid was yelling "Allah is power" and "Islam is great" while holding a pen in a fist over his head. Witnesses said he shouted anti-Christian comments, said police.
Lt. Mike Elerick of the Pleasanton Police Department said the man was not provoked and didn't threaten violence, but he committed robbery when he grabbed and broke a crucifix off someone's neck.
Coworkers told police that Hamid's actions were out of the ordinary and that he had worked at the kiosk for years.

Read the whole thing in The Danville Press.

More from Michael's article, an excellent comment on a personal experience by Ratko:

Now I realize Libs are imbeciles, they hate America, and have no confidence in Americans whatsoever, they can't change any of that, but, they can do this:
QUIT SCARING THESE PEOPLE FOR NO DAMN GOOD REASON THEY'VE DONE NOTHING TO YOU SO LEAVE THEM THE HELL ALONE!!

See what lead to the shouting at the link in his handle.  It is an amazing and uplifting story.  The people of this country, almost to the person, do exactly what Ratko did.  The give support to their friends.

You don't have to remind me.  Facts don't matter, emotions matter to these people who are trying to scare us into surrender.  Looking at you New York Times and MSNBC.

New info December 29, 2009: Now we have the Pantybomber, fresh from terrorist school in Yemen.  Exploding bloomers photos here.  Any "backlash" yet?  The airlines let a person, already on watch lists in England and the US, get on TWO international flights without a passport, no problem.  Wouldn't want to seem harsh or anything.  Don't bother taking away his US Visa either!

Whip toss to Amy Alkon.

Spotted in this Slashdot story:

Sorry, Shoppers, but Why Can’t Amazon Collect More Tax?

Amazon has found a way to put portions of its business into the tax-haven equivalent of reservations. By creating wholly owned subsidiaries for the parts that are treated separately for tax matters, Amazon is under no obligation to collect sales tax. This legal technique is called “entity isolation,” said Michael Mazerov, a senior fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington.
They are following the complicated laws in an efficient manner, with the help of some very expensive lawyers. What's the problem?

Poor, Downtrodden Terrorist News

Amy Alkon has some great comments and her readers offer some too.

From her linked article in the Independent: Abdulmutallab, 23, had lived a gilded life, and, for the three years he studied in London, he stayed in a £2m flat.

Jesse Walker has this at Reason:

Security Theater: A New Show Opens In Detroit

With the Bruce Schneier money quote: Only two things have made flying safer [since 9/11]: the reinforcement of cockpit doors, and the fact that passengers know now to resist hijackers.

Also at Reason, Tim Cavanaugh with:

Open Thread: TSA To Keep Us Safe From Nigerian Terrorists, Bankers' Sons, 419 Scammers

Since everybody seems to want to talk about the latest inTransportation Safety Administration foolproofitude, here's your chance.
Possible topics:
Liquids banned. Solids banned. Will gases be banned next?
If you're not allowed to keep anything on your lap, do barf bags and in-flight magazines become attractive nuisances?

Other reports mention that Abdulmutallab hid his PETN explosives in his underwear.
