Assange Rape Case Reopened

Slashdot Your Rights Online Story | Assange Rape Case Reopened:
"'Wikileaks' Julian Assange had a warrant issued for his arrest in Sweden on the charges of rape. But it was withdrawn shortly thereafter. Now the case has been reopened to investigate 'molestation charges.' On top of that, a new site (parody?) called wikileakileaks.org has been launched by the chief editor of Gawker to give Wikileaks a taste of its own medicine. You can find links to details on the molestation charges there.'"
Wikileaks is the organization behind this bit of deception: Collateral Murder

Assange: Swedish charge still unclear - CNN.com

Assange: Swedish charge still unclear - CNN.com:
"(CNN) -- The founder and editor of whistle-blower website WikiLeaks says Swedish authorities still haven't given him details of the crime he is alleged to have committed.
'The present investigation of issue (there are no charges), is one alleged non-sexual 'harassment,'' Julian Assange wrote Thursday in an e-mail to CNN. 'I have no idea what this is and no details have been provided to us.'
Swedish authorities arrested Assange 'in absentia' over the weekend on two charges -- rape and molestation, a non-sexual charge that is similar to harassment.
The chief prosecutor has since revoked the arrest warrant and dropped the rape charge, though Assange still faces the molestation allegation."
This story is less and less of a tie-in to the Suki series every day.  John and Suki really don't like the courts that much.

Sweden Defends Assange Warrant Decisions: Mistake? What mistake?

Update to previous stories:

SkunkPost.com || Mistake? What mistake?:
KARL RITTER, Associated Press Writer

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Swedish prosecutors defended their handling of a rape allegation against the founder of WikiLeaks, saying Sunday that they had made no mistakes in issuing an arrest warrant and withdrawing it less than a day later.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange said the short-lived warrant had damaged his group nonetheless.

The Swedish Prosecution Authority said an 'on-call' prosecutor issued an arrest warrant for Assange late Friday only to see it revoked the next day by a higher-ranked prosecutor, who found no grounds to suspect him of rape.

'The prosecutor who took over the case yesterday had more information, and that is why she made a different assessment than the on-call prosecutor,' said Karin Rosander, a spokeswoman for the authority.

She declined to specify what the new material was, but said there was 'absolutely nothing' that suggested errors had been made by either prosecutor.
Slashdot is covering this now (Sunday August 22, @01:27PM).

Slashdot | Without Registration, Swedish Law Does Not Protect Wikileaks Sources

Aw, how sad! NOT!

Slashdot | Without Registration, Swedish Law Does Not Protect Wikileaks Sources:
An anonymous reader writes with word that Wikileaks, which currently stores a lot of their material on servers in Sweden, may not be as safe there as once believed. From the above linked article (from April): 'Wikileaks is benefiting form Sweden's basic law 'Grundlag' on the freedom of print information, because it also guarantees the anonymity of sources in digital media, say sources at the European Parliament. In Sweden, if a website registers with the public authorities and can prove it has an editor-in-chief, then it can also be protected under the law, argues the parliamentary source.' Says the anonymous submtter, 'However, it seems Wikileaks never registered with the public authorities (article in Swedish; here it is auto-translated to English), and thus is not protected by the freedom of print information basic law even if they do have an editor-in-chief.'
