Weird People who Know You Write

I am beginning to feel glad that I am not at the level of Stephen King (I am a fan of his work) or Bob Dylan (not a fan of his work, love the interviews).  I hardly sell anything right now and I get all sorts of weirdness just because I decided to start writing fiction.

Yesterday I happened across a military veteran I know.  I only know him from two local bars and this is the first meeting we had in months.  Nice Navy veteran with a lovely daughter, who worked in one of the bars we would chat in every few weeks or so.  As far as I know, the only writing of mine he has read was when I was working on my laptop next to him and I asked him to read over a passage or two.

"John, so how is your book going about everybody in the cafe?"

"My new book about what?"

"You know, about R* and the regulars at KSB?"

"B* I never wrote a book about that."

"Oh, I thought all your characters were based on those guys?"

"No, I make all my characters up.  There was a rumor at M* that my characters were based on that place."

"Oh yea, that book, how's it going?"

"Nothing I wrote is based on there either.  It is called fiction for a reason.  At M* they have a proof copy of the first series in the office, because I wrote a lot of it there, but it isn't based on anybody there either.  There was this weird chick I met at M* who imagined she had qualities of my main character [gave examples], but she was just nuts, I don't do that."

"Oh, I thought it was."

"Then go take a look at it and get back to me on which character is based on anybody from either place, ok?"

"Okay man, nice to see you.  I'm going downstairs to play some pool."

Another one for the weird file.

The Way I Write the Future

I really want to say I just sit down and write what I think things will be like tempered with how I would like them to become, but that is not accurate. I do a lot of research, with lots of help since I began writing the Suki series last year.  So, let me try to break it down a little.
When I was younger, by definition my body of experience was limited. I could read about past events, but tying them together and noticing trends usually (always?) resulted in incorrect predictions. I always found 'futuristic accuracy' to be important.  Now that I am pushing fifty and still the news junkie I was as a kid, trends are easier to notice. One of them is the liberalization of society. No pejorative tone there either and there is no arguing around it. North American society has been on a continued social liberalization trend since Columbus and there is no sign of that changing. South American, European and East Asian societies, save for a few pockets, are trending the same way. Not going to speculate on Africa, I haven’t followed events there that much.

With that backdrop, I can speculate or even predict that all recreational drug use will continue, increase, become more common, less stigma, etc. I think back to a William F. Buckley, Jr. speech where he mentions how society had moved in the aspect of litter, drugs and sex. Not quoting exactly, but the punch line was to the effect: Today an unmarried couple might smoke a joint on a boat then have sex with a condom, but it would be a ‘sin’ to toss the used condom or roach into the sea afterward. In my futures, any recreational drug you hear of now is available and either legal or tolerated. In the original series, the couple abstains from all of it. In Suki With A Twist, they are both responsible users of many things.

That is the kind of idea that I go with for the future. Multiple partner relationships appear to be on the fringe today, on the surface, but over the years I finally noticed how common it actually is in reality. In the future, I write, that is a common and open practice. Not something that interests me at all in my personal life, just something I do not see going onto decline. It also made for something to make the John and Suki characters unique against the other characters. They are the only characters in my books that seek a monogamous relationship and back it up by the way they act. I got most of my future society feedback from Derek Walker, named on sever book covers as a contributor. He got me to rethink a few things and helped with the stories too.

In fashion, I have noticed things from the fetish world become mainstream, especially in cities. Necklaces that look like chokers, or “slave” collars, extreme spike heel shoes for the women, more corset-style waists on outfits, the list goes on. Not seeing that change either, seems to be accelerating now. Sometimes I will pick a societal rule and carry it into the future with no idea if it will continue or die. I remember when it was a big deal for women to wear pants in the workplace, now it is common. Someone mentioned a “rule” for women just before I began writing Suki I, legs always covered in the office. Had heard of it before too, about ten years earlier. So I tossed that in, just as the “crazy pattern hose” fad erupted. When I was in my 20’s there was a lace-pattern hosiery fad that came and went, decades later fishnets are common and now odd crisscross patterns are everywhere. They get a mention, not going away in the future.

Imagine if the color of your clothes could change on the fly? I wondered if it was possible and discovered electrochromic polymers, but today they cannot be spun into a fabric. Pretty sure someone will figure out how in the next 20 years and some men, many women, will be wearing color morphing outfits.

A trap I did not want to fall into was underestimating the progress of gadgetry. And I fell right into it in the first series, I think I fixed it in the second. NO FLYING CARS! I knew you were thinking that and I don’t use them. I despise time travel too, unless it is a story about time travel. Otherwise, it always comes across as a cheap device for the writer to escape a corner they have written themselves into. I am looking at you, Star Trek. I concentrate on the devices people use every day, but I did sort of cheat. I gave Suki and her mother hypnosis abilities, the classic kind that some people think works today. It did come in handy several places and backfires badly early. When the couple is severely traumatized, having Jung as an expert hypnotherapist, in addition to other skills, comes in very handy.

Something I think I underestimated in the original series was computing interfaces. I have two varieties of “phones,” something that is traditional like the iPhone of today, but with more computing power, that John and Suki’s mother, Jung, use and then I have “gogs” that Suki and her peers use. Gogs are simply glasses with transparent LED screens and earbuds for sound.

After more research between books and a few new technology press releases, I decided that those are just around the corner and will be ‘ancient’ by the 2030’s. Saran and Suki helped jump my mind forward when they came up with deeply inserted earbuds and contacts with video. I added smaller, powerful computers with massive memory, also small. I needed a power source and don’t see batteries really increasing in storage capacity for what I wanted, so I reduced the power consumption of the devices to work with a thermocouple, using the body heat of the user, and some chemistry for the screens, using the saline of the eye as a reactive power source.

Something else I updated in Suki With A Twist, doing laundry. John’s big “single chamber” washer/dryer senses what has been placed in it, does an analysis, applies the right temperatures and detergents and runs. That is another trend that is never going to stop, appliances moving towards effortlessness. Compare a VCR of old with one now.

As far as the law goes, I am a less is better sort of person. Being a Libertarian and preferring the founder’s original intent of the Constitution, a Libertopia of that sort would be fun to write. But I tempered it with what I notice happens with the law. The place where I illustrate it most obviously is in Suki II: Sunshine Returns. The couple’s attackers use marriage, paternity and the court system to hatch a plot to steal the couple’s money. It was surprisingly simple. The only thing I see getting streamlined for citizens the legal process is filing actions with them, so I made it possible to electronically marry, with same-sex marriage legal too. Getting divorced? Electronically file that too. Equitable property division? Not so fast! Especially if the “injured” party in the relationship is the only one showing up in court.

Matters of health are advancing rapidly. What if an embryo could be “harvested” from the birth mother after implantation and transferred to a surrogate? Then imagine the risk a wealthy male would be taking whenever he had sex with a woman who could be fertile. Now, what court wouldn’t enforce child support against the man? They show no signs of changing there, even if the woman tricks the man into pregnancy. I do use genetic testing to prove whom the baby belongs to and that might improve in the future.

As for the bondage/discipline aspects of the story, I have no idea of that is going to be more common in the future than it is today. I just gave the likes to the couple to make more exciting private scenes with them. They do stick with the “sane set” limits, safe-words, etc. in both series.

That’s all for now!

PS, Suki II: Sunshine Returns, is still available as a free PDF download.  I think it might be cheaper to order the paperback instead of downloading and printing, the option is yours. Can read on Scribd now too.

Random Babble

If you have been following me on Twitter @JohnTagliaferro this might be a rehash.

I can forgive readers who might think my fiction is reality in disguise.  Fiction writers who say that annoy me Grow an imagination. - John Tagliaferro
I can't say the above enough. I try not to get frustrated with other writers, but the ones who think fiction can't consist of a made-up story are relentless.  It is as if they can't imagine making up a character out of features that make them likable or awful without them being based on a real person from your life.  It is pretty easy really.  Real-life Suki (not her real name either) and I created fiction Suki from the idea of an attractive woman with dark hair and dark eyes.  All we started with.  Yep, we both know women like that, even some who have not always been women.  Cloning a real person from our history was never even a thought.

Next step, I wrote out a list of other features.  High education, tall, lean, athletic, brilliant, exotic.  At first, she was going to appear sweet but she and her mother were really high-tech grifters.  In the next round of changes, Suki and I think Danielle talked me out of a 6' tall hot chick.  Just because I like that does not mean anybody else will.  The character became 5' 6" long dark hair, dark brown eyes (or "coal black") and a few other details.

If she is highly educated she had to go to school somewhere.  It is in the future so people are getting Masters and Doctorates like they get BA degrees today, so that had to be unique.  Geek guy mind to the rescue.  Sci-fi readers and watchers, like me, are suckers for the hot brainy girl in the lab, we love gadgetry and technology.  The character got her Mathematics degree from the University of Virginia, Bionics masters at the Tokyo University of Technology and PhD in Robotics from MIT.  I had to look up where a Masters in Bionics was offered and TUT was the first one I found.  Made for a good location if I continued the series and needed some exotic history for her too.

While outlining the first story, the mother/daughter grifter team just wasn't working for me, so that got modified, I also realized that the character needed parents, but we had not yet decided on her race.  Dark hair and eyes are the most common combination on earth, so I used Google Images to see what was most popular.  Asian, hands down, are the most popular female images that come up with that search.  Keeps with the exotic looks requirement for the character too.  We fleshed out other details, like a knack for linguistics, hobbies, other skills.  I stuck with things that I am at least conversant on, after having to look up so many other things for her.

If you have noticed my not using the character name for a few paragraphs, that is because her race and name were decided last.  I met a waitress with that name in the 1980s, who does not resemble Suki at all.  Neither do my character development collaborators.  So, I was almost ready to write, but I did not have a back story for her.  Real-life Suki came to the rescue on Google Maps, making a map of where her parents and other relatives might be from, where John is from, etc.  I tweaked a few things and Suki became a small-town girl from outside Richmond, VA.  Daughter of a now deceased South Vietnam fighter pilot and Thai/Korean mother who waited until late in life to have a child after they moved to Virginia.

Actual work time on this was just a few hours stretched over weeks, including changes.  I was working on the other characters at the same time.  John is not "me" at all, but he does have a background that I can write about.  Suki and John needed some friends, so I made up a few for them.  They were easier, since they are not as prominent, I found the farther I got away from the main characters the more I could stretch out into fields I was not as conversant in.  Suki's best friends are a CPA and a Secretary.  John's is a Security Manager, former Marine.  John's character was always going to be a nice guy, much nicer than me, so I only had to do some minor revisions when Danielle and Suki read his description to make him more attractive to readers.

With the characters set and an ever changing plot in my head, I put the first outline aside.  It had some good ideas in it, so I didn't get rid of it.  I think I had read a few things about romances and erotica that I needed to do.  The readers need to know why the characters are attracted to each other.  There has to be a threat to them getting together, can't be a "slam dunk."  Threats to the relationship have to appear and they need to triumph over them.  So, Suki and Jung, her mother, became good people.  Suki wasn't always good, she has a pretty bad past, in spite of having a great mother.  No, I don't know the people you know like that, lol, they are all over the place.  Actually, I made them becoming such a high hurdle that I felt like I was cheating giving Jung and Suki hypnosis powers.  Then I ran into enough people who think it works (I am not convinced) and like it in fantasy stories that I didn't feel so bad.  It became something fun to work with, along with the future drugs and appliances I was making up as the series progressed.

The bondage theme is a remnant from the original outline.  I didn't think anybody wanted to read about a plain vanilla romance.  They are both down to earth, incredibly successful in different fields, deeply interested in each other, and far from perfect.  I know a little about that scene, but still needed to research a few details.

With a decent new outline in hand, I began writing, without stopping, for a few weeks.  At 90,000 words I was more than double my target length.  I should have divided it into three books, but I didn't.  I did decide to make it a series and used what I learned for the rest.  An afterthought, John was supposed to be successful and nice, but that was to set him up to be the victim of Suki and Jung in a much racier story.  Nobody has said he was too nice for this.  Happy accident.

Part of my decision on making an alternate future Suki series was feedback on the first one.  Other authors use time travel as a tool in their stories.  I use it to write the story I should have begun with.
