Reason Discovers a Libertarian Issue in a Second Amendment Story
This is amazing, with their record on covering the Ground Zero favoritism-towards-Mosques issue:
Second Amendment Foundation Sues Over Chicago Range Ban - Hit & Run : Reason Magazine
*******
Series tie-in: These issues have been generally settled in 2030s America. In the new series, Suki With A Twist, the couple even has their pistols with them, legally, in San Francisco. In both series, Washington, DC is the only big USA city that is still trying to block the Second Amendment protected rights of citizens.
In Suki IV: Finally a Vacation (War With Iran), John teaches Suki how to shoot skeet and trap at Eglin AFB with her new Benelli semi-automatic shotgun.

Second Amendment Foundation Sues Over Chicago Range Ban - Hit & Run : Reason Magazine
While the Second Amendment Foundation and their legal paladin Alan Gura won McDonald v. Chicago at the Supreme Court, causing Chicago to redo its restrictive gun laws, even the new ones don't pass legal muster, the SAF believes, and has filed a new lawsuit challenging aspects of Chicago's post-McDonald gun laws.Read the whole thing. Brian Doherty has some great points.

The only series tie-in here is that neither John, nor his son Tag, talk much about their awards. There is slight mention in Suki III that John tended to put his fellow Soldiers in for awards while he never sought them.

"PASADENA, Calif. – A three-year-old federal law that makes it a crime to falsely claim to have received a medal from the U.S. military is unconstitutional, an appeals court panel in California ruled Tuesday. At least this panel from the 9th had one member with some sense. Too bad it was only one.
The decision involves the case of Xavier Alvarez of Pomona, Calif., a water district board member who said at a public meeting in 2007 that he was a retired Marine who received the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration.
Alvarez was indicted in 2007. He pleaded guilty on condition that he be allowed to appeal on First Amendment grounds. He was sentenced under the Stolen Valor Act to more than 400 hours of community service at a veterans hospital and fined $5,000.
A panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with him in a 2-1 decision Tuesday, agreeing that the law was a violation of his free-speech rights. The majority said there's no evidence that such lies harm anybody, and there's no compelling reason for the government to ban such lies.
The dissenting justice insisted that the majority refused to follow clear Supreme Court precedent that false statements of fact are not entitled to First Amendment protection."

Series tie-in: Same sex marriage is legal in the 2030s and results in odd situations that were never anticipated by many people debating the issue today.

"Judge Walker rules again. Here’s the doc.
Los Angeles Times write-up:
Reporting from San Francisco — A federal judge Thursday refused to permanently stay his ruling overturning Proposition 8 but extended a temporary hold to give supporters time to appeal the historic ruling.
U.S. District Judge Vaughn R. Walker, who overturned the measure on Aug. 4, agreed to give its sponsors until Aug. 18 to appeal his ruling to the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. No new marriages can take place until then.
Walker’s decision came after supporters of the same-sex marriage ban warned that they would take their case to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary to ensure that his ruling did not take effect.
More, as always, on Bench Memos."

What Color Is Your Legal Ability?
I was disgusted by talk I heard on CNN and elsewhere by people who say President Obama should appoint a "person of color" or a woman to the Supreme Court. Shockingly, I think he should appoint the best legal mind for the job, and look for that person in a totally color-blind and vagina-blind way.Discussion at the link

MN Supreme Court Backs Reasoned Requests For Breathalyzer Source Code
viralMeme writes with news that the Minnesota Supreme Court has upheld the right of drunk-driving defendants to request the source code for the breathalyzer machines used as evidence against them, but only when the defendant provides sufficient arguments to suggest that a review of the code may have an impact on the case. In short: no fishing expeditions.
